Abstract

A subcutaneously implantable device includes a housing, a first prong, and a second prong. A first electrode on the first prong is configured to contact the first lung. A second electrode on the device is configured to contact the first lung or a second lung. A third electrode on the second prong is configured to contact the heart or the tissue surrounding the heart. Sensing circuitry in the housing in electrical communication with the first electrode, the second electrode, and the third electrode is configured to measure an impedance in the first lung and/or the second lung, and/or a transthoracic impedance across the first lung and the second lung through the first electrode and the second electrode, and to measure an electrical signal from the heart through the third electrode.

Claims (43)

1 . A subcutaneously implantable device comprising:

a housing;

a first stiff prong with a proximal end attached to the housing and a distal end extending away from the housing that is configured to contact a first organ and/or a first tissue;

a first electrode on the first stiff prong that is configured to contact the first organ and/or the first tissue;

a second electrode on the device; and

sensing circuitry in the housing in electrical communication with the first electrode and the second electrode that is configured to sense a first ECG vector between the first electrode and the second electrode.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the first stiff prong and the first electrode are configured to contact a heart or a tissue surrounding the heart.

3 . The device of claim 1 , and further comprising:

a second stiff prong with a proximal end attached to the housing and a distal end extending away from the housing that is configured to contact the first organ and/or the first tissue;

wherein the second electrode is on the distal end of the second stiff prong and is configured to contact the first organ and/or the first tissue.

4 . The device of claim 3 , wherein the distal end of the second stiff prong and the second electrode are configured to contact a heart or a tissue surrounding the heart.

5 . The device of claim 3 , and further comprising:

a third electrode on a front end of the housing; and

a fourth electrode on a back end of the housing.

6 . The device of claim 5 , wherein the sensing circuitry is in electrical communication with the third electrode and the fourth electrode and is configured to sense a second ECG vector between the third electrode and the fourth electrode.

7 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the first ECG vector is orthogonal to the second ECG vector.

8 . The device of claim 6 , and further comprising:

a third stiff prong with a proximal end attached to the housing and a distal end extending away from the housing that is configured to contact the heart; and

a fifth electrode on the distal end of the third stiff prong that is configured to contact a heart.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the sensing circuitry is in electrical communication with the fifth electrode and is configured to sense a third ECG vector between the fifth electrode and the first electrode, the second electrode, the third electrode, or the fourth electrode.

10 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode is on the housing.

11 . The device of claim 10 , and further comprising:

a third electrode on the housing.

12 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the sensing circuitry is in electrical communication with the third electrode and is configured to sense a second ECG vector between the second electrode and the third electrode.

13 . The device of claim 12 , wherein the second electrode is on a front end of the housing and the third electrode is on a back end of the housing.

14 . The device of claim 1 , and further comprising:

a clip attached to a top side of the housing that is configured to anchor the device to a muscle, a bone, and/or a second tissue.

15 . A method of measuring ECG vectors across a heart using a subcutaneously implantable device, the method comprising:

anchoring the device to a muscle, a bone, and/or a first tissue, wherein the device includes a housing, a first stiff prong with a proximal end attached to the housing and a distal end extending away from the housing that is configured to contact a first organ and/or a second tissue, and a second stiff prong with a proximal end attached to the housing and a distal end extending away from the housing that is configured to contact the first organ and/or the second tissue;

measuring, with sensing circuitry in the housing, a first ECG vector between a first electrode positioned on the distal end of the first stiff prong and a second electrode positioned on the distal end of the second stiff prong; and

measuring, with the sensing circuitry in the housing, a second ECG vector between a third electrode on a front end of the housing and a fourth electrode on the back end of the housing.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the first ECG vector is orthogonal to the second ECG vector, and further comprising:

determining a surface ECG of the heart based on the first ECG vector and the second ECG vector.

17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein anchoring the device to a muscle, a bone, and/or a first tissue further comprises:

anchoring the device to the muscle, the bone, and/or the first tissue using a clip of the device.

18 . A method of measuring ECG vectors across a heart using a subcutaneously implantable device, the method comprising:

anchoring the device to a muscle, a bone, and/or a first tissue, wherein the device includes a housing and a first stiff prong with a proximal end attached to the housing and a distal end extending away from the housing that is configured to contact a first organ and/or a second tissue;

measuring, with sensing circuitry in the housing, a first ECG vector between a first electrode positioned on a distal end of the first stiff prong and a second electrode on the housing; and

measuring, with the sensing circuitry in the housing, a second ECG vector between the second electrode on the housing and a third electrode on the housing.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein an angle between the first ECG vector and the second ECG vector is known, and further comprising:

determining a surface ECG of the heart based on the first ECG vector and the second ECG vector.

20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein anchoring the device to a muscle, a bone, and/or a first tissue further comprises:

anchoring the device to the muscle, the bone, and/or the first tissue using a clip of the device.
