Systems and methods for providing contextual information
Systems and methods are described herein for causing to be provided contextual information for a content item. The system identifies that a subject in a content item is currently being referenced and determines whether consumption of the content item could be enhanced based on the referenced subject. For example, the system identifies a king being discussed by characters in a television series and determines the king was referenced three months ago. The system determines, based on the last time the subject was referenced, whether to provide contextual information about the subject. Using the determined three-month lapse in time since the king was last referenced, the system determines that contextual information about the king should be provided. Accordingly, the system causes to be displayed the contextual information within closed captioning after determining contextual information should be provided.
1 . A method for causing a reminder to be provided over a communication network, the method comprising:
tracking, via a remote server, an avatar interacting with a plurality of video game objects on a map of a video game, wherein the avatar is associated with a user profile; and wherein the tracking comprises:
receiving data from a user device, wherein the data identifies at least one control input received via the user device, and wherein the at least one control input causes the avatar to interact with the plurality of video game objects on the map of the video game;
based on the tracking the avatar, determining, via the remote server, that the avatar is interacting with a first video game object of the plurality of video game objects on the map of the video game, wherein the first video game object is a non-player character of the video game;
accessing a database located at the remote server to identify the user profile associated with the avatar;
querying the database to determine that the first video game object is associated with an in-game purchase of a second video game object previously made by the avatar associated with the user profile;
determining, based on a purchase history associated with the user profile stored at the database, that an object type matching the second video game object was previously purchased;
determining that a video game object that matches the object type of the second video game object is absent from an in-game inventory of the avatar; and
based at least in part on (a) determining that the first video game object is associated with the in-game purchase of the second video game object, (b) determining that the object type matching the second video game object was previously purchased by the avatar associated with the user profile and (c) determining that a video game object that matches the object type of the second video game object is absent from the in-game inventory of the avatar:
generating, via the remote server, a reminder relevant to the in-game purchase of the second video game object to be displayed on the user device.
2 . A method of claim 1 , wherein the purchase history of previously purchasing the object type matching the second video game object includes a last purchase of the object type matching the second video game object.
3 . A method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a second in-game inventory indicating an amount of purchasable objects associated with the user profile at a time of a last purchase of the object type matching the second video game object associated with the user profile.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the reminder is obtained from an external database.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the external database is provided by a provider of the video game.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining an association between the first video game object and the second video game object comprises accessing a database of association information and wherein the association information comprises an importance level of the association.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein to generate the reminder is further based on a user preference.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the reminder comprises a selectable icon.
9 . A system for causing a reminder to be provided over a communication network, the system comprising:
input/output circuitry configured to transmit video game data associated with a video game to a user device; and
control circuitry configured to:
track, via a remote server, an avatar interacting with a plurality of video game objects on a map of the video game, wherein the avatar is associated with a user profile; and wherein the control circuitry is configured to track the avatar by:
receiving data from the user device, wherein the data identifies at least one control input received via the user device, and wherein the at least one control input causes the avatar to interact with the plurality of video game objects on the map of the video game;
based on the tracking the avatar, determine, via the remote server, that the avatar is interacting with a first video game object of the plurality of video game objects on the map of the video game, wherein the first video game object is a non-player character of the video game;
access a database located at the remote server to identify the user profile associated with the avatar;
query the database to determine that the first video game object is associated with an in-game purchase of a second video game object previously made by the avatar associated with the user profile;
determine, based on a purchase history associated with the user profile stored at the database, that an object type matching the second video game object was previously purchased;
determine that a video game object that matches the object type of the second video game object is absent from an in-game inventory of the avatar; and
based at least in part on (a) determining that the first video game object is associated with the in-game purchase of the second video game object, (b) determining that the object type matching the second video game object was previously purchased by the avatar associated with the user profile and (c) determining that a video game object that matches the object type of the second video game object is absent from the in-game inventory of the avatar:
generate, via the remote server, a reminder relevant to the in-game purchase of the second video game object to be displayed on the user device.
10 . A system of claim 9 , wherein the purchase history of previously purchasing the object type matching the second video game object includes a last purchase of the object type matching the second video game object.
11 . A system of claim 9 , the control circuitry further configured to determine a second in-game inventory indicating an amount of purchasable objects associated with the user profile at a time of a last purchase of the object type matching the second video game object associated with the user profile.
12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the reminder is obtained from an external database.
13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the external database is provided by a provider of the video game.
14 . The system of claim 9 , wherein to determine an association between the first video game object and the second video game object further comprises the control circuitry configured to access a database of association information and wherein the association information comprises an importance level of the association.
15 . The system of claim 9 , wherein to generate the reminder is further based on a user preference.
16 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the reminder comprises a selectable icon.
