Abstract

Battery powered quadrotors or drones have a limited operation time. To extend operation time, a powered tether can be used. This tether provides power to the drone allowing it to stay up indefinitely. Most tethered drones are captured to the base station. The tether can reel in and out as the drone moves, but the drone can't go higher or further than the maximum length of the tether. If the tether can be automatically disconnected, the drone could fly off for some remote mission, assuming the drone had an onboard power source such as rechargeable batteries. The present invention relates to a self-powered drone tether that comprises a rechargeable drone in flight which is referred to as the rechargeable drone, a drone that carries a powered tether which is referred to as the tether drone, a coupling mechanism between the rechargeable drone and the tether drone, and a base station with a powered tether and tether deployment system.

Claims (23)

1 . A method, comprising:

coupling a tether drone having a powered tether attached thereto to a rechargeable drone when the rechargeable drone is in an airborne condition; and

transmitting at least one of power and data via the powered tether through the tether drone to the rechargeable drone.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable drone includes one or more lifting motors and one or more batteries coupled to the one or more lifting motors; and

wherein transmitting the at least one of power and data comprises transmitting power through the tether drone to charge the one or more batteries to assist in operating the one or more lifting motors.

3 . The method according to claim 2 wherein coupling the tether drone includes transitioning the one or more lifting motors from an active state to a disengaged state.

4 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein coupling the tether drone includes supporting, with the tether drone, the rechargeable drone in the airborne condition.

5 . The method according to claim 1 , including selectively transitioning the tether drone between a coupled relation with the rechargeable drone and a released relation with the rechargeable drone.

6 . The method according to claim 5 , wherein the tether drone includes a first docking segment and the rechargeable drone includes a second docking segment;

wherein selectively transitioning the tether drone includes engaging the first docking segment and the second docking segment to effect the coupled relation of the tether drone and the rechargeable drone and disengaging the first docking segment and the second docking segment to effect the released relation of the tether drone and the rechargeable drone.

7 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein coupling the tether drone includes coupling a single tether drone to the rechargeable drone.

8 . The method according to claim 2 , including reducing, with a down voltage converter, voltage associated with power transmitted through the powered tether for use by the one or more batteries of the rechargeable drone.

9 . A system, comprising:

a rechargeable drone including one or more lifting motors and one or more rechargeable batteries to provide power to the one or more lifting motors;

a powered tether; and

a tether drone attached to the powered tether and configured to selectively transition between a coupled relation with the rechargeable drone and a released relation with the rechargeable drone;

wherein, in the coupled relation, the one or more lifting motors of the rechargeable drone transition from an active state to a disengaged state.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the tether drone and the rechargeable drone selectively transition between the coupled relation and the released relation in association with relative movement of the tether drone and the rechargeable drone between an approximated position and a displaced position, and when in an airborne condition of the rechargeable drone.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the tether drone includes a first docking segment and the rechargeable drone includes a second docking segment, the first and second docking segments engaged when in the coupled relation of the tether drone and the rechargeable drone, and disengaged when in the released relation of the tether drone and the rechargeable drone.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first docking segment and the second docking segment comprises one or more of an electromagnet and a permanent magnet.

13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the tether drone includes a down voltage converter, the down voltage converter configured to reduce voltage associated with power transmitted through the powered tether for use by the one or more rechargeable batteries of the rechargeable drone.

14 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the tether drone is a single tether drone.

15 . The system of claim 9 , further comprising a base station, the base station including a tether deployment system that is coupled to selectively deploy or retrieve the tether drone.
