Abstract

A method, apparatus, and system for imaging a scene.

Claims (47)

1 . A receiver comprising:

a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) to capture light, the PIC comprising:

a plurality of gratings, wherein a first grating of the plurality of gratings has a first pitch along a direction of the first grating that is different from a second pitch along a direction of a second grating of the plurality of gratings;

a plurality of waveguides;

a plurality of couplers; and

a set of photodetectors coupled to each coupler of the plurality of couplers, wherein each waveguide of the plurality of waveguides connects a grating of the plurality of gratings to a coupler of the plurality of couplers.

2 . The receiver of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of gratings has a linear distribution in grating pitch.

3 . The receiver of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of gratings has a stepwise distribution in grating pitch.

4 . The receiver of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of gratings has a non-linear distribution in grating pitch.

5 . The receiver of claim 1 , further comprising:

an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), wherein the ADC is communicatively coupled to an output from the set of photodetectors.

6 . The receiver of claim 2 , further comprising:

a digital signal processor (DSP), wherein the ADC is coupled to the DSP, wherein the DSP is configured to determine a distance from light reflected from a scene.

7 . The receiver of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of gratings is configured to receive light reflected from a scene.

8 . The receiver of claim 7 , wherein the received light reflected from the scene is sent to the plurality of waveguides.

9 . The receiver of claim 1 , wherein each coupler of the plurality of couplers is connected to a waveguide of the plurality of waveguides, wherein the PIC is arranged to capture light from a wavelength sweeping laser.

10 . A method comprising:

receiving light at a plurality of gratings from a wavelength-sweeping laser, wherein the received light travels down each waveguide of a plurality of waveguides on a PIC to a plurality of couplers, wherein each respective grating of the plurality of gratings has a respective waveguide of the plurality of waveguides connecting each respective grating to a respective coupler of the plurality of couplers, wherein a first grating of the plurality of gratings has a first pitch along a direction of the first grating that is different from a second pitch along a direction of a second grating of the plurality of gratings;

interfering, using each coupler of the plurality of couplers, the received light and light split from the wavelength-sweeping laser; and

measuring, using a set of photodetectors coupled to each coupler of the plurality of couplers, a difference between the received light and the light split from the laser.

11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

sending the measured difference to an analog digital converter; and

converting the measured difference to digital data.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

sending the digital data to a digital signal processor (DSP); and

calculating a point cloud for a scene using the DSP.

13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

sending the digital data to a digital signal processor (DSP); and

calculating a distance.

14 . A system comprising:

a wavelength-sweeping laser;

a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) comprising:

a plurality of gratings, wherein a first grating of the plurality of gratings has a first pitch along a direction of the first grating that is different from a second pitch along a direction of a second grating of the plurality of gratings;

a plurality of waveguides;

a plurality of couplers; and

a set of photodetectors coupled to each coupler of the plurality of couplers, wherein each waveguide of the plurality of waveguides connects a grating of the plurality of gratings to a coupler of the plurality of couplers, wherein each coupler of the plurality of couplers is connected to a waveguide of the plurality of waveguides; wherein the PIC is arranged to capture light from the wavelength-sweeping laser;

wherein the PIC is configured to:

receive light at the plurality of gratings, wherein the received light travels down the plurality of waveguides to the plurality of couplers, wherein each respective grating of the plurality of gratings has a respective waveguide of the plurality of waveguides connecting the each respective grating of the plurality of gratings to a respective coupler of the plurality of couplers;

interfere, using each coupler of the plurality of couplers, the received light with light split from the wavelength-sweeping laser; and

measure, using the set of photodetectors, the interference between the received light and the light split from the laser.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of gratings has a linear distribution in grating pitch.

16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of gratings has a stepwise distribution in grating pitch.

17 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of gratings has a non-linear distribution in grating pitch.

18 . The system of claim 14 , further comprising:

an analog to digital converter (ADC), wherein the PIC is enabled to send a measured difference of the interference between the received light and the light split from the wavelength-sweeping laser to an analog digital converter, wherein the ADC is enabled to convert the measured difference to digital data.

19 . The system of claim 18 , further comprising:
