Abstract

An apparatus for incubating a plurality of receptacles includes one or more thermally-conductive receptacle holders, each comprising a plurality of receptacle wells. A thermally-conductive support is associated with each of the receptacle holders, and a thermal element is positioned between the associated support and the receptacle holder. A heat sink is in thermal communication with the support and comprises a plurality of spaced-apart fins. An optical fiber associated with each receptacle well has a first end positioned adjacent to or within a through-hole formed in the receptacle well and extends through through-holes formed in the support and the heat sink aligned with the through-hole of the receptacle well. Each of the optical fibers is positioned between two adjacent fins of the plurality of fins.

Claims (26)

1 . An apparatus for incubating a plurality of receptacles, the apparatus comprising:

one or more thermally-conductive receptacle holders, each of the receptacle holders having a top and bottom and opposed front and back sides, wherein each of the receptacle holders comprises a plurality of receptacle wells, each of the receptacle wells being open to the top of the corresponding receptacle holder and configured to receive a receptacle, and wherein each of the receptacle wells has a through-hole extending from an inner surface of the receptacle well through bottom of the corresponding receptacle holder;

a thermally-conductive support associated with each of the receptacle holders, wherein each of the receptacle holders is held in a fixed position with respect to the associated support, and wherein the associated support includes a plurality of through-holes, each of the through-holes of the associated support being aligned with a corresponding one of the through-holes extending from the inner surface of each of the receptacle wells;

a thermal element associated with each of the receptacle holders and its associated support, wherein each thermal element is positioned between a portion of the associated support and the back side of the associated receptacle holder;

a heat sink in thermal communication with each support, wherein the heat sink comprises a plurality of spaced-apart fins and includes a plurality of through-holes, each of the through-holes of the heat sink being aligned with a corresponding one of the through-holes of the associated support; and

a plurality of optical fibers associated with each of the receptacle holders, each of the optical fibers having a first end and a second end, the first end of each optical fiber being positioned adjacent to or within a through-hole of an associated one of the receptacle wells, wherein each of the optical fibers extends through the through-holes of the associated support and the associated heat sink aligned with the corresponding through-hole of the associated receptacle well, and wherein each of the optical fibers is positioned between two adjacent fins of the plurality of fins.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the through-hole of each of the receptacle wells is positioned at a bottom-center of the receptacle well.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each associated support comprises:

a base portion disposed on top of the heat sink, wherein the through-holes of the holder are formed in the base portion; and

an upright portion extending from the base portion, wherein the thermal element is positioned between the upright portion of the associated support and the back side of the associated receptacle holder.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second end of each of the optical fibers is in optical communication with at least one of an excitation signal source and an emission signal detector.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the through-holes of each associated support forms a channel supporting a fixed or moveable ferrule and through which a corresponding one of the optical fibers passes.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a spring biased against each ferrule, wherein each ferrule is movably supported in the channel so that the spring urges the first end of the corresponding optical fiber into the associated receptacle well.

7 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the spring is disposed within the through-hole of the associated heat sink corresponding to the through-hole of the associated support supporting the ferrule.

The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising one or more force-applying bodies associated with each of the receptacle holders, each of the force-applying bodies being positioned to provide a compressive force to only the front side of the receptacle holder in a direction toward the thermal element positioned between the upright portion of the associated support and the back side of the receptacle holder.

The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein each of the force-applying bodies comprise one or more cross-braces associated with each of the receptacle holders, each of the cross-braces being coupled to the associated support such that the receptacle holder held in a fixed position with respect to the associated support is positioned between the cross-brace and upright portion of the support.

The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein each of the force-applying bodies comprises a linker and a low thermal conductive body, each linker and low thermal conductive body having a first portion coupled to a second support separate from the associated support with respect to which the receptacle holder is fixed and a second portion coupled to the front side of the receptacle holder.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first end of each optical fiber is moveable with respect to the through-hole of the associated receptacle well.

12 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the receptacle holders is held in a fixed position with respect to each associated support so that there is a gap between the bottom of the receptacle holder and a top of the associated heat sink.

13 . The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein each of the receptacle holders is held in a fixed position with respect to each associated support so that there is a gap between the bottom of the receptacle holder and a top of the base portion of the associated support.

14 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each associated thermal element is a Peltier device.

15 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising one or more thermal devices disposed within each associated heat sink for pre-heating the heat sink.

16 . The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein each of the one or more thermal devices comprises a cartridge heater embedded in the associated heat sink.

17 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a first controller electrically connected to each associated thermal element to cycle the temperature of the thermal element.

18 . The apparatus of claim 17 , further comprising one or more thermistors disposed in contact with each receptacle holder.

19 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus comprises two or more receptacle holders.
