Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for presenting an interactive content item matching a user-selected category to a user for a desired duration. A user selects a category and selects a first interactive content item on a media system. The system calculates a total duration of a storyline from the selected interactive content item that matches the selected category (e.g., a genre “comedy”) and compares the calculated duration to a desired predetermined duration for which the user wishes to watch the selected show. If the system determines, for instance, that the total duration of the selected storyline is less than the predetermined duration, the system identifies scenes from another show and interleaves them with scenes from the first interactive content item to generate a combined interactive content item that satisfies the user viewing preferences.

Claims (87)

1 - 30 . (canceled)

31 . A method comprising:

receiving a selection of a first content item;

receiving a selection of a keyword;

identifying user preference information associated with a user profile;

calculating a threshold length of desired content duration based on the user preference information;

identifying scenes from the first content item that match the selected keyword;

extracting identified scenes from the first content item;

in response to determining that a length of the extracted scenes is below the threshold length of desired content duration;

identifying a second content item based on at least one of the selection of the first content item or selection of the keyword;

extracting scenes from the second content item that match the keyword;

combining the extracted scenes from the first content item and extracted scenes from the second content item; and

generating for output the combined content item.

32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein identifying the second content item based on at least one of the selection of the first content item or the selection of the keyword comprises:

retrieving a first set of metadata corresponding to the first content item;

identifying the second content item having a second set of corresponding metadata matching the first set of metadata; and

extracting from the second content item scenes matching the selected keyword.

33 . The method of claim 32 , wherein the first set of metadata corresponding to the first content item comprises at least one of cast information, genre information, ratings information, and duration information.

34 . The method of claim 31 , wherein receiving the selection of the keyword comprises:

retrieving metadata for each scene from the first content item;

determining, from the retrieved metadata, keyword information indicative of a category with which each scene of the second content item is associated;

generating for output a list of keywords generated based on the determined keyword information; and

receiving, from the generated list of keywords, the selection of the keyword for the selected first content item.

35 . The method of claim 34 , wherein each keyword in the generated list of keywords corresponds to a storyline that is present in the first content item.

36 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the first content item and the second content item are part of a series of sequentially ordered items.

37 . The method of claim 31 , further comprising:

identifying a first list of actors included in the scenes from the first content item;

identifying a second list of actors included in the scenes from the second content item; and

in response to determining an overlap between the first list of actors included in the scenes from the first content item and the second list of actors included in the scenes from the second content item:

arranging the scenes of the first content item adjacent to the scenes of the second content item.

38 . The method of claim 31 , wherein combining the extracted scenes from the first content item and the extracted scenes from the second content item comprises:

arranging each of the scenes from the first content item and the scenes from the second content item in a sequence to create a storyline matching the selected keyword.

39 . The method of claim 31 , further comprising

receiving a selection of a third content item;

receiving a selection of the keyword;

identifying the user preference information associated with the user profile;

calculating the threshold length of desired content duration based on the user preference information;

identifying scenes from the third content item that match the selected keyword;

extracting identified scenes from the third content item;

in response to determining that a length of the extracted scenes is matching or above the threshold length of desired content duration;

generating for output the extracted scenes.

40 . The method of claim 39 , wherein generating for output the extracted scenes further comprises:

arranging the extracted scenes from the third content item in a sequence to create a storyline matching the selected keyword.

41 . A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive a selection of a first content item;

receive a selection of a keyword;

identify user preference information associated with a user profile;

calculate a threshold length of desired content duration based on the user preference information;

identify scenes from the first content item that match the selected keyword;

extract identified scenes from the first content item;

in response to determining that a length of the extracted scenes is below the threshold length of desired content duration;

identify a second content item based on at least one of the selection of the first content item or selection of the keyword;

extract scenes from the second content item that match the keyword;

combine the extracted scenes from the first content item and extracted scenes from the second content item; and

input/output circuitry configured to:

generate for output the combined content item.

42 . The system of claim 41 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to identify the second content item based on at least one of the selection of the first content item or the selection of the keyword by:

retrieving a first set of metadata corresponding to the first content item;

identifying the second content item having a second set of corresponding metadata matching the first set of metadata; and

extracting from the second content item scenes matching the selected keyword.

43 . The system of claim 42 , wherein the first set of metadata corresponding to the first content item comprises at least one of cast information, genre information, ratings information, and duration information.

44 . The system of claim 41 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to receive the selection of the keyword by:

retrieving metadata for each scene from the first content item;

determining, from the retrieved metadata, keyword information indicative of a category with which each scene of the second content item is associated;

generating for output a list of keywords generated based on the determined keyword information; and

receiving, from the generated list of keywords, the selection of the keyword for the selected first content item.

45 . The system of claim 44 , wherein each keyword in the generated list of keywords corresponds to a storyline that is present in the first content item.

46 . The system of claim 41 , wherein the first content item and the second content item are part of a series of sequentially ordered items.

47 . The system of claim 41 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

identifying a first list of actors included in the scenes from the first content item;

identifying a second list of actors included in the scenes from the second content item; and

in response to determining an overlap between the first list of actors included in the scenes from the first content item and the second list of actors included in the scenes from the second content item:

arranging the scenes of the first content item adjacent to the scenes of the second content item.

48 . The system of claim 41 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to combine the extracted scenes from the first content item and the extracted scenes from the second content item by:

arranging each of the scenes from the first content item and the scenes from the second content item in a sequence to create a storyline matching the selected keyword.

49 . The system of claim 41 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receiving a selection of a third content item;

receiving a selection of the keyword;

identifying the user preference information associated with the user profile;

calculating the threshold length of desired content duration based on the user preference information;

identifying scenes from the third content item that match the selected keyword;

extracting identified scenes from the third content item;

in response to determining that a length of the extracted scenes is matching or above the threshold length of desired content duration;

generating for output the extracted scenes.

50 . The system of claim 49 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to generate for output the extracted scenes further by:

arranging the extracted scenes from the third content item in a sequence to create a storyline matching the selected keyword.
