Abstract

A wireless power transfer system is disclosed. The wireless power transfer system includes a first converting unit configured to convert a first DC voltage of an input power to a first AC voltage. Further, the wireless power transfer system includes a contactless power transfer unit configured to receive the input power having the first AC voltage from the first converting unit and transmit the input power. Also, the wireless power transfer system includes a second converting unit configured to receive the input power from the contactless power transfer unit and convert the first AC voltage of the input power to a second DC voltage. Furthermore, the wireless power transfer system includes a switching unit configured to regulate the second DC voltage across the electric load if the second DC voltage across the electric load is greater than a voltage reference value.

Claims (27)

1 . An apparatus for receiving wireless power, the apparatus comprising:

a secondary coil configured to receive wireless power from a primary coil, the wireless power having an alternating current (AC) voltage;

a converting unit comprising a first plurality of circuit elements configured to convert the wireless power to an output direct current (DC) voltage;

a first transceiver configured to communicate a signal representative of the output DC voltage to adjust the AC voltage; and

a switching unit electrically coupled to the converting unit, the switching unit comprising a second plurality of circuit elements configured to regulate the output DC voltage based on the output DC voltage and a voltage reference value.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the switching unit is configured to decouple the converting unit to protect one or more components of the apparatus.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein to decouple the converting unit, the switching unit is configured to decouple the converting unit within a time period beginning after the first transceiver communicates the signal representative of the output DC voltage and prior to an adjustment of the wireless power.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first transceiver is further configured to receive a reset signal, the reset signal for recoupling the converting unit to an electric load.

5 . The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the output DC voltage comprises a DC voltage across the electric load coupled to the converting unit, and wherein the switching unit comprises:

a sensor electrically coupled to the electric load and configured to determine the output DC voltage; and

a controller electrically coupled to the sensor and a switch of the switching unit and configured to determine a duty cycle of a control signal configured to control the switch, based on the output DC voltage.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the controller is configured to generate and feed the control signal having the duty cycle to the switch to regulate the wireless power provided to the converting unit.

7 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the controller is configured to determine the duty cycle of the control signal using a look-up table having a plurality of duty cycle values, each duty cycle value of the plurality of duty cycle values corresponding to a different output DC voltage.

8 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first transceiver is configured to transmit the signal to a second transceiver to cause a power transmitter converting unit associated with the primary coil to adjust the AC voltage of the wireless power based on the signal representing the DC voltage.

9 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the electric load includes one or more batteries of a vehicle.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the converting unit is electrically coupled to a power source that provides a first DC voltage, and wherein the converting unit is configured to convert the first DC voltage to the AC voltage.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the switching unit configured to regulate the output DC voltage based on the output DC voltage and the voltage reference value comprises the switching unit configured to regulate the output DC voltage when the output DC voltage is greater than the voltage reference value.

12 . A method for receiving wireless power, the method comprising:

receiving, via a secondary coil, wireless power having an alternating current (AC) voltage from a primary coil;

converting the wireless power to an output direct current (DC) voltage;

communicating a signal representative of the output DC voltage, the signal to request adjustment of the AC voltage; and

regulating, by a switching unit, the output DC voltage based on the output DC voltage and a voltage reference value.

13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising decoupling the converting unit to protect one or more components of the converting unit.

14 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising receiving a reset signal from a transceiver of a wireless power transmission unit, the reset signal for recoupling the converting unit to an electric load.
