Abstract

An infusion device configured to implant a cannula and a sensor in a user. The infusion device includes a first unit defining a first housing and a second unit defining a second housing. The second housing is configured to engage the first housing. The infusion device includes a first insertion needle configured to implant the cannula in the user and a second insertion needle configured to implant the sensor in the user when the second unit engages the first unit. The infusion device includes processing circuitry in electrical communication with the sensor and a fluid reservoir in fluid communication with the cannula. In examples, the first unit and the second unit are configured to engage using an inserter.

Claims (35)

1 . A system comprising:

an inserter comprising a plunger defining a plunger cavity therein, an inserter member slidably disposed within the plunger and defining an inserter member cavity therein, an insertion spring, and a withdrawal spring, wherein the inserter has a proximal end portion and a distal end portion configured to be positioned adjacent a user's skin during an insertion operation;

a first unit detachably coupled to the distal end portion of the inserter member, the first unit comprising:

a first housing,

processing circuitry disposed within the first housing,

first and second channels defined by and extending through the first housing,

a fluid access path and a fluid reservoir in fluid communication with the fluid access path, wherein both the fluid access path and the fluid reservoir are disposed within the first housing; and

a second unit disposed within the inserter member cavity, spaced apart from the first unit, wherein the second unit comprises a cannula, a sensor, and a detachable needle carrier comprising a first insertion needle releasably carrying the cannula and a second insertion needle releasably carrying the sensor,

wherein the inserter is configured such that:

distal movement of the plunger relative to the inserter member causes the insertion spring to force the second unit distally into operable engagement with the first unit such that (a) the first insertion needle and associated cannula and second insertion needle and associated sensor extend through respective first and second channels in the first housing such that an end of the cannula is in fluid communication with the fluid access path, and (b) the sensor of the second unit is electrically coupled to the processing circuitry of the first unit, and

activation of the withdrawal spring causes the needle carrier to move proximally relative to the second unit such that the first and second needles are withdrawn through the first and second channels and are removed from the first and second units.

2 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a discharging member disposed within the inserter member cavity and movable longitudinally relative to the inserter member, wherein the insertion spring is disposed between the discharging member and the plunger housing.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the withdrawal spring is disposed within the plunger cavity and between the discharging member and the needle carrier of the second unit.

4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein distal movement of the plunger relative to the inserter member and discharging member compresses the insertion spring.

5 . The system of claim 4 , further comprising a release device configured to maintain the discharging member substantially stationary relative to the inserter member as the plunger moves distally relative to the inserter member.

6 . The system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a first release device configured to maintain the discharging member substantially stationary relative to the inserter member as the plunger moves distally relative to the inserter member, and

a second release device configured to maintain the needle carrier of the second unit substantially stationary relative to the second unit when the insertion spring causes the second unit to move towards the first unit.

7 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a release device configured to maintain the needle carrier of the second unit substantially stationary relative to the second unit when the insertion spring causes the second unit to move towards the first unit.

8 . A system comprising:

an inserter comprising a plunger defining a plunger cavity therein, an inserter member slidably disposed within the plunger and defining an inserter member cavity therein, and an insertion spring, wherein the inserter has a proximal end portion and a distal end portion configured to be positioned adjacent a user's skin during an insertion operation;

a first unit detachably coupled to the distal end portion of the inserter member, the first unit comprising:

a first housing,

processing circuitry disposed within the first housing,

first and second channels defined by and extending through the first housing,

a fluid access path and a fluid reservoir in fluid communication with the fluid access path, wherein both the fluid access path and the fluid reservoir are disposed within the first housing; and

a second unit disposed within the inserter member cavity, spaced apart from the first unit, wherein the second unit comprises a cannula, a sensor, and a detachable needle carrier comprising a first insertion needle releasably carrying the cannula and a second insertion needle releasably carrying the sensor,

wherein the inserter is configured such that distal movement of the plunger relative to the inserter member causes the insertion spring to force the second unit distally into operable engagement with the first unit such that (a) the first insertion needle and associated cannula and second insertion needle and associated sensor extend through respective first and second channels in the first housing such that an end of the cannula is in fluid communication with the fluid access path, and (b) the sensor of the second unit is electrically coupled to the processing circuitry of the first unit.

9 . The system of claim 8 , further comprising a discharging member disposed within the inserter member cavity and movable longitudinally relative to the inserter member, wherein the insertion spring is disposed between the discharging member and the plunger housing.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein distal movement of the plunger relative to the inserter member and discharging member compresses the insertion spring.

11 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising a release device configured to maintain the discharging member substantially stationary relative to the inserter member as the plunger moves distally relative to the inserter member.

12 . The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a first release device configured to maintain the discharging member substantially stationary relative to the inserter member as the plunger moves distally relative to the inserter member, and

a second release device configured to maintain the needle carrier of the second unit substantially stationary relative to the second unit when the insertion spring causes the second unit to move towards the first unit.

13 . The system of claim 8 , further comprising a release device configured to maintain the needle carrier of the second unit substantially stationary relative to the second unit when the insertion spring causes the second unit to move towards the first unit.
