Abstract

Methods and apparatus are described for automatically disarming a security system. For example, a method for automatically disarming a security system is described, comprising determining, by a personal communication device, when a person is in proximity to the person's home or business and, in response to determining that the person is in proximity to the person's home or business, transmitting a disarm command by the personal communication device to a security controller for the security controller to disarm the security system.

Claims (34)

1 . A method, performed by a personal communication device, for automatically disarming a security system, comprising:

registering with the security system;

in response to registering with the security system, wirelessly receiving a code from the security system;

determining that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system; and

in response to determining that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system, transmitting a disarm command by the personal communication device to disarm the security system, the disarm command comprising the code.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system comprises determining that the personal communication device is within range of a local area network associated with the security system.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining when the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system comprises:

receiving a second code from a device associated with the security system when the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system;

comparing the second code to the code received from the security system; and

determining that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system when the second code matches the code received from the security system.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein transmitting the disarm command comprises transmitting the disarm command over the local area network.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein transmitting the disarm command comprises transmitting the disarm command over a wide-area cellular network.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an indication that the security system has been disarmed after transmitting the disarm command.

7 . A personal communication device for automatically disarming a security system that monitors a home or a business, comprising:

a transceiver for wirelessly transmitting and receiving information;

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions; and

a processor, coupled to the transceiver and the memory, for executing the processor-executable instructions that causes the personal communication device to:

register with the security system;

in response to registering with the security system, wirelessly receive a code from the security system;

determine that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system; and

in response to determining that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system, transmit a disarm command by the personal communication device to disarm the security system, the disarm command comprising the code.

8 . The personal communication device of claim 7 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that causes the personal communication device to determine that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system comprises instructions that causes the personal communication device to:

determine that the personal communication device is within range of a local area network associated with the security system.

9 . The personal communication device of claim 7 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that causes the personal communication device to determine that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system comprises instructions that causes the personal communication device to:

receive a second code from a device associated with the security system when the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system;

compare the second code to the code received from the security system; and

determine that the personal communication device is in proximity to the security system when the second code matches the code received from the security system.

10 . The personal communication device of claim 8 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that causes the personal communication device to transmit the disarm command comprises instructions that causes the personal communication device to:

transmit the disarm command over the local area network.

11 . The personal communication device of claim 8 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that causes the personal communication device to transmit the disarm command comprises instructions that causes the personal communication device to:

transmit the disarm command over a wide-area cellular network.

12 . The personal communication device of claim 7 , wherein the processor-executable instructions comprise further instructions that causes the personal communication device to:

receive an indication that the security system has been disarmed after transmitting the disarm command.
