Abstract

Breast securement devices for imaging systems are provided. The securement device can include a breast tray configured to support a patient's breast. In one example, one or more walls extend from the breast tray to receive the patient's breast. In another example, a pair of arms pivotably extend at least partially over the breast tray to receive the patient's breast therebetween. In still another example, a membrane covers the breast tray and the patient's breast and selectively couples to the breast tray via a suction force. In yet another example, a paddle includes a plurality of flexible fingers that contour to the patient's breast, or includes an array of pins that independently slide within of the paddle and contour to the patient's breast, or includes a bladder having non-Newtonian fluid. Additionally or alternatively, a sling may receive the patient's breast and support the breast from below.

Claims (29)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . An imaging system for a breast, the imaging system comprising:

a tube head;

an x-ray source disposed in the tube head;

an x-ray detector; and

a breast support device disposed between the x-ray source and the x-ray detector, wherein the breast support device comprises a breast tray configured to support the breast and a membrane configured to cover at least a portion of the breast tray and the breast, wherein the breast support device further includes a vacuum system configured to couple the membrane to the breast tray via a suction force and immobilize the breast.

22 . The imaging system of claim 21 , wherein the breast tray comprises a stabilization surface that has a plurality of holes in fluid communication with the vacuum system.

23 . The imaging system of claim 22 , wherein a vacuum chamber is defined at least partially within the breast tray and adjacent the stabilization surface.

24 . The imaging system of claim 23 , wherein the vacuum chamber is configured to induce a vacuum between the membrane and the breast tray during operation of the vacuum system.

25 . The imaging system of claim 21 , wherein a vacuum chamber is defined at least partially within the breast tray.

26 . The imaging system of claim 25 , wherein the vacuum chamber is in fluid communication with the vacuum system.

27 . The imaging system of claim 21 , further comprising a cover configured to be disposed between the breast and the breast tray.

28 . The imaging system of claim 27 , wherein the cover covers one or more holes defined on the breast tray.

29 . The imaging system of claim 21 , wherein the membrane is flexible.

30 . The imaging system of claim 21 , wherein the membrane is disposable.

31 . The imaging system of claim 21 , wherein the membrane is coupled to the breast tray and the suction force is applied directly to the membrane.

32 . The imaging system of claim 21 , wherein the imaging system is a mammography or tomosynthesis imaging system.

33 . A method of imaging a breast with an imaging system including an x-ray source and an x-ray detector, the method comprising:

receiving the breast on a breast tray, wherein the breast tray is disposed above the x-ray detector;

covering at least a portion of the breast tray and the breast with a membrane;

generating a suction force with a vacuum system so as to couple the membrane to the breast tray and immobilize the breast; and

while the breast is immobilized, emitting x-ray energy from the x-ray source towards the breast and receiving the x-ray energy at the x-ray detector.

34 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the breast tray includes a stabilization surface with a plurality of holes, and wherein the breast is received on the stabilization surface and generating the suction force includes drawing out air in the space between the membrane and the breast tray via the vacuum system.

35 . The method of claim 34 , wherein the breast tray defines a vacuum chamber, and wherein drawing out air includes generating a vacuum within the vacuum chamber via the vacuum system.

36 . The method of claim 34 , further comprising placing a cover between the breast and the breast tray so that at least one hole is covered.

37 . The method of claim 34 , further comprising disposing of the membrane.

38 . The method of claim 34 , further comprising shaping at least a portion of the breast with the suction force.

39 . The method of claim 34 , further comprising pulling breast tissue away from a chest wall with the suction force.

40 . The method of claim 34 , wherein the emission of x-ray energy is part of a mammography or tomosynthesis imaging procedure.
