Abstract

Systems and methods are described herein for selective playback of portions of audio at normal speed during a fast-forward operation. Upon receiving a command to perform a fast-forward operation, a current playback position is identified, as well as a plurality of portions of audio of the content item that will be subject to the fast-forward operation. A subset of the audio portions that will be subject to the fast-forward operation are selected. The fast-forward operation is initiated, and video of the content item is played back at the increased speed while the selected portions of audio of the content item are played back at normal speed.

Claims (52)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving a command to perform a fast-forward operation for fast-forwarding from a current location in a content item to a desired location;

determining a duration to perform the fast-forward operation from the received command;

determining, based on the duration, that a time required to play a current audio segment associated with the current location of the content item exceeds the duration of the fast-forward operation; and

in response to determining that the time required to play the current audio segment associated with the current location of the content item exceeds the duration of the fast-forward operation, reducing a speed of the fast-forward operation from its current speed and calculating a new duration to perform the fast-forward operation based on the reduced speed.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining the time required to play the current audio segment associated with the current location; and

reducing the speed of the fast-forward operation to a lower speed, wherein the duration to perform the fast-forward operation after the reduced lower speed is same or less than the time required to play the current audio segment.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a second command to perform a second fast-forward operation for fast-forwarding from the second location in the content item to a third location;

determining a duration to perform the fast-forward operation for fast-forwarding from the second location in the content item to the third location;

determining that a time required to play an audio segment associated with the second location exceeds the duration of the fast-forward operation for fast-forwarding from the second location in the content item to the third location; and

reducing playing of one or more portions of the audio segment associated with the second location.

4 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

determining an importance level of a plurality of portions of the audio segment associated with the second location; and

reducing playing of those one or more portions, from the plurality of portions, which are lesser in importance than other portions, from the plurality of portions.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a third command to perform a third fast-forward operation wherein the fast-forwarding operation is performed at a first speed and initiated at a third play position in the content item;

determining that a duration to perform the third fast-forward operation at the first speed exceeds an amount of time required to play a third audio segment associated with the third play position;

calculating an importance level for the third audio segment; and

fast-forwarding the content item at the first speed in response to determining that the importance level of the third audio segment is below a threshold importance level.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the importance level calculated is based on a significance factor and a preference factor.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the significance factor represents significance of the third audio segment to an overall plot of the content item.

8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the preference factor is based on a comparison between metadata associated with the third audio segment and a user preference.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, generating a moving window corresponding to the reduced speed, wherein the moving window is advanced at a speed corresponding to the reduced speed.

10 . A system comprising:

input/output circuitry configured to:

receiving a command to perform a fast-forward operation for fast-forwarding from a current location in a content item to a desired location; and

processing circuitry configured to:

determine a duration to perform the fast-forward operation from the received command;

determine, based on the duration, that a time required to play a current audio segment associated with the current location of the content item exceeds the duration of the fast-forward operation; and

in response to determining that the time required to play the current audio segment associated with the current location of the content item exceeds the duration of the fast-forward operation, reduce a speed of the fast-forward operation from its current speed and calculate a new duration to perform the fast-forward operation based on the reduced speed.

11 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising, the processing circuitry configured to:

determine the time required to play the current audio segment associated with the current location; and

reduce the speed of the fast-forward operation to a lower speed, wherein the duration to perform the fast-forward operation after the reduced lower speed is same or less than the time required to play the current audio segment.

12 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising, the processing circuitry configured to:

receive a second command to perform a second fast-forward operation for fast-forwarding from the second location in the content item to a third location;

determine a duration to perform the fast-forward operation for fast-forwarding from the second location in the content item to the third location;

determine that a time required to play an audio segment associated with the second location exceeds the duration of the fast-forward operation for fast-forwarding from the second location in the content item to the third location; and

reduce playing of one or more portions of the audio segment associated with the second location.

13 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising, the processing circuitry configured to:

determine an importance level of a plurality of portions of the audio segment associated with the second location; and

reduce playing of those one or more portions, from the plurality of portions, which are lesser in importance than other portions, from the plurality of portions.

14 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising, the processing circuitry configured to:

receive a third command to perform a third fast-forward operation wherein the fast-forwarding operation is performed at a first speed and initiated at a third play position in the content item;

determine that a duration to perform the third fast-forward operation at the first speed exceeds an amount of time required to play a third audio segment associated with the third play position;

calculate an importance level for the third audio segment; and

fast-forward the content item at the first speed in response to determining that the importance level of the third audio segment is below a threshold importance level.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the importance level calculated by the processing circuitry is based on a significance factor and a preference factor.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the significance factor represents significance of the third audio segment to an overall plot of the content item.

17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the preference factor is based on a comparison between metadata associated with the third audio segment and a user preference.

18 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising, the processing circuitry configured to generate a moving window corresponding to the reduced speed, wherein the moving window is advanced at a speed corresponding to the reduced speed.
