Abstract

The present disclosure is directed toward systems, methods, and non-transitory computer readable media for generating, providing, and editing collaborative content items on client devices. For example, the disclosed systems provide a collaborative content item that includes a text display state and a render display state. A client device can provide for the collaborative content item to receive source text in the text display state. Then, based on the source text, the client device can provide for display of the collaborative content item in the render display state that generates a graphical representation for the collaborative content item based on rendering the source text. In some embodiments, the disclosed systems and methods allow two or more client devices to simultaneously modify the source text associated with the collaborative content item, and in turn, modify the graphical representation of the collaborative content item based on the modified source text.

Claims (58)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

providing, to a first client device, a collaborative content item comprising:

a text display state for inputting source text to generate a graphical representation; and

a render display state that provides a rendering of the graphical representation;

providing, for display on the first client device, the collaborative content item in the render display state by rendering the source text to provide the graphical representation;

determining that a second client device is actively modifying the source text of the collaborative content item; and

based on determining that the second client device is actively modifying the source text of the collaborative content item, providing, for display on the first client device, a visual indication in association with the rendering of the graphical representation in the render display state to indicate that the second client device is actively modifying the source text of the collaborative content item.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the render display state of the collaborative content item comprises the rendering of the graphical representation while refraining from displaying the source text.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising providing the collaborative content item within an online document that is simultaneously accessible by the first client device and the second client device.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the visual indication provided in association with the rendering of the graphical representation comprises a user identification associated with the second client device.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the second client device, updated source text based on the second client device modifying the source text; and

based on determining whether the updated source text is renderable:

updating, on the first client device, the graphical representation for the collaborative content item in the render display state based on determining the updated source text is renderable; or

continuing to provide, on the first client device, the graphical representation for the collaborative content item based on the source text based on determining the updated source text is unrenderable.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the second client device, a comment associated with the graphical representation of the collaborative content item in the render display state; and

providing, for display on the first client device, the comment in association with the graphical representation of the collaborative content item in the render display state.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the second client device, a comment associated with the source text of the collaborative content item in the text display state; and

refraining from providing, on the first client device, the comment associated with the source text while providing the graphical representation of the collaborative content item in the render display state.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising:

receiving, from the first client device, an indication of a user interaction to switch the display of the collaborative content item from the render display state to the text display state on the first client device; and

providing, for display on the first client device, the collaborative content item in the text display state along with the comment.

9. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

provide, to a first client device, a collaborative content item comprising:

a text display state for inputting source text to generate a graphical representation; and

a render display state that provides a rendering of the graphical representation;

provide, for display on the first client device, the collaborative content item in the render display state by rendering the source text to provide the graphical representation; and

based on determining that a second client device is actively modifying the source text of the collaborative content item, provide, for display on the first client device, a visual indication in association with the rendering of the graphical representation in the render display state to indicate that the second client device is actively modifying the source text of the collaborative content item.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to provide the collaborative content item within an online document that is simultaneously accessible by the first client device and the second client device.

11. The system of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to refrain from providing for display, on the first client device, the source text while providing the collaborative content item in the render display state.

12. The system of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

determine whether updated source text received from the second client device is renderable; and

continue to provide, on the first client device, the graphical representation for the collaborative content item based on the source text in response to determining the updated source text is unrenderable.

13. The system of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

receive, from the second client device, a comment associated with the graphical representation of the collaborative content item in the render display state; and

provide, for display on the first client device, the comment in association with the graphical representation of the collaborative content item in the render display state.

14. The system of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

determine updated source text received from the second client device is unrenderable; and

provide, for display on the first client device, the graphical representation in the render display state based on the source text and an error notification associated with the graphical representation.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the visual indication provided in association with the rendering of the graphical representation comprises a user identification associated with the second client device.

16. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a computing device to:

provide, to a first client device, a collaborative content item comprising a text display state for inputting source text to generate a graphical representation and a render display state that provides a rendering of the graphical representation;

provide, for display on the first client device, the collaborative content item in the render display state by rendering the source text to provide the graphical representation; and

based on determining that a second client device is actively modifying the source text of the collaborative content item, provide, for display on the first client device, a visual indication in association with the rendering of the graphical representation in the render display state to indicate that the second client device is actively modifying the source text of the collaborative content item.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to provide the collaborative content item within an online document that is simultaneously accessible by the first client device and the second client device.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

determine whether updated source text received from the second client device is renderable; and

continue to provide, on the first client device, the graphical representation for the collaborative content item based on the source text in response to determining the updated source text is unrenderable.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

receive, from the second client device, a comment associated with the graphical representation of the collaborative content item in the render display state; and

provide, for display on the first client device, the comment in association with the graphical representation of the collaborative content item in the render display state.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

determine updated source text received from the second client device is unrenderable; and

provide, for display on the first client device, the graphical representation in the render display state based on the source text and an error notification associated with the graphical representation.
