Abstract

A system or method for determining a battery state can include receiving a set of sensor measurements; determining the battery state using a state estimator collocated with the battery; and determining parameters used by the state estimator using a second state estimator operating on a processor remote from the battery.

Claims (13)

1 . A method for determining a battery state of a battery comprising:

receiving a set of sensor measurements from a sensor suite associated with the battery;

determining the battery state using a state estimator to process the set of sensor measurements according to a physical battery model, wherein the battery state is determined on a processor collocated with the battery; and

determining parameters of the physical battery model using a second state estimator operating on a second processor that is remote from the battery.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the physical battery model comprises a cell model, a pack geometry model, an electrochemical model, and a thermal transport model.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the cell model comprises a heat generation model, a cell thermal transport model, and an equivalent circuit model.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the equivalent circuit model is parameterized as a function of at least one of temperature or state of charge.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the parameters of the physical battery model comprises determining a parameterization of the battery model.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the parameterization of the physical battery model is updated in response to an age of the battery exceeding a threshold age.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the state estimator comprises a look-up table and a set of equations relating elements of the look-up table, wherein the second state estimator comprises an unscented Kalman filter, wherein the unscented Kalman filter determines elements of the look-up table.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the processor updates the physical battery model with the parameters determined by the second state estimator with less than a threshold downtime where the battery state cannot be determined.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein battery state is determined at a first frequency, wherein the parameters are determined at a second frequency, wherein the first frequency is greater than the second frequency.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the battery state is determined in response to receiving an application program interface request.
