Abstract

A sensor array ( 10 ) comprising a plurality of touch sensitive pixels, each pixel ( 12 ) comprising a capacitive sensing electrode ( 14 ) and a reference capacitor ( 16 ) connected in series with the capacitive sensing electrode ( 14 ) to provide an indicator voltage that is indicative of the proximity of a conductive object to be sensed.

Claims (38)

1 . A capacitive sensor comprising a plurality of pixels, each pixel comprising:

a capacitive sensing electrode;

a reference capacitor;

a sense voltage-controlled impedance, VCI;

a select VCI; and

a reset VCI;

wherein a first plate of the reference capacitor is connected to a gate line for said pixel, and wherein a second plate of the reference capacitor is connected to each of: a conduction path of the reset VCI, a control terminal of the sense VCI, and the capacitive sensing electrode.

2 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the select VCI is configured to selectively connect the sense VCI to a reference signal supply.

3 . The sensor of claim 2 , wherein the select VCI is configured to selectively connect the sense VCI to the reference signal supply to selectively permit the sense VCI to output a readout signal indicative of a proximity to the capacitive sensing electrode of a conductive object.

4 . The sensor of claim 2 , wherein a control terminal of the select VCI is connected to the gate line for said pixel.

5 . The sensor of claim 2 , wherein the sensor is configured to activate a pixel by operating the select VCI of that pixel to connect the sense VCI of that pixel to the reference signal supply to permit said sense VCI to output a readout signal.

6 . The sensor of claim 2 , wherein the select VCI is arranged to inhibit a sense VCI outputting a readout signal when said pixel is not activated.

7 . The sensor of claim 2 , wherein a conduction path of the select VCI is connected between the reference signal supply and a conduction path of the sense VCI.

8 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the pixel is arranged so that an impedance of the sense VCI is controlled based on a capacitance from the capacitive sensing electrode, and wherein the select VCI is configured to selectively connect the sense VCI to a reference signal supply to permit the sense VCI to output a readout signal indicative of said capacitance.

9 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is configured to reset the reference capacitor prior to a subsequent activation of the pixel.

10 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is configured to activate a sensor pixel by applying a gate drive signal to the gate line for that pixel.

11 . The sensor of claim 10 , wherein activating the pixel comprises applying the gate drive signal to the first plate of the reference capacitor and the select VCI.

12 . The sensor of claim 11 , wherein the sensor is configured to apply the gate drive signal to the select VCI to cause the select VCI to connect the sense VCI to the reference signal supply to permit the sense VCI to output a readout signal indicative of a proximity to the capacitive sensing electrode of a conductive object.

13 . A capacitive sensor comprising a plurality of pixels, each pixel comprising:

a capacitive sensing electrode;

a reference capacitor;

a sense voltage-controlled impedance, VCI; and

a reset VCI;

wherein a first plate of the reference capacitor is connected to a gate line for said pixel, and wherein a second plate of the reference capacitor is connected to each of: a conduction path of the reset VCI, a control terminal of the sense VCI, and the capacitive sensing electrode; and

wherein at least one plate of the reference capacitor is provided by a layer of a thin film structure which provides the sense VCI.

14 . The sensor of claim 13 , wherein the layer is a metallisation layer of the thin film structure.

15 . The sensor of claim 13 , wherein the sense VCI is selectively connectable to a reference signal supply.

16 . The sensor of claim 15 , wherein the sensor is configured to activate a pixel by selectively connecting the sense VCI of that pixel to the reference signal supply to permit said sense VCI to output a readout signal indicative of a proximity to the capacitive sensing electrode of a conductive object.

17 . A capacitive sensor comprising a plurality of pixels, each pixel comprising:

a capacitive sensing electrode;

a reference capacitor;

a sense voltage-controlled impedance, VCI; and

a select VCI;

wherein a first plate of the reference capacitor is connected to a gate line for said pixel, and wherein a second plate of the reference capacitor is connected to each of a control terminal of the sense VCI and the capacitive sensing electrode; and

wherein the select VCI is configured to selectively connect the sense VCI to a reference signal supply to selectively permit the sense VCI to output a readout signal indicative of a proximity to the capacitive sensing electrode of a conductive object.

18 . The sensor of claim 17 , wherein the sensor is configured to activate a pixel by operating the select VCI of that pixel to connect the sense VCI of that pixel to the reference signal supply to permit said sense VCI to output a readout signal.

19 . The sensor of claim 18 , wherein the sensor is configured to activate said pixel by applying a gate drive signal to the gate line for said pixel.

20 . The sensor of claim 17 , wherein each pixel comprises a reset VCI, and wherein the reset VCI is connected to each of the second plate of the reference capacitor, the capacitive sensing electrode, and the control terminal of the sense VCI.
