Abstract

The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical liquid composition, wherein said liquid composition comprises at least one cooling agent comprising of a phenyl ring containing a polar side group at least one viscosity enhancing agent and at least one surfactant. The invention also relates to a method to produce such a pharmaceutical composition as well as a method of alleviating a symptom selected from the group consisting of cough, nasal congestion and sore throat in a subject comprising administering the composition according to any of preceding claims.

Claims (12)

. A pharmaceutical orally administrated liquid composition, wherein said liquid composition comprises at least one systemically acting active antihistamine ingredient, at least one cooling agent comprising of a phenyl ring containing a polar side group, at least one viscosity enhancing agent and at least one surfactant comprising at least one poloxamer selected from poloxamer 189, poloxamer 338 and poloxamer 237, wherein the at least one viscosity enhancing agent is in an amount of from 0.1% w/w to 5% w/w, the at least one surfactant is an amount from 0.1% w/w to 1.0% w/w and the at least one cooling agent is in an amount from 0.005% w/w to 1.0% w/w and further wherein the composition is for oral administration of the systemically acting antihistamine active ingredient and provides increased viscosity and increased residence time to increase the extent and duration of cooling sensation.

. The pharmaceutical liquid composition of claim 1 , wherein the cooling agent is selected from the group consisting of menthyl glutarate, menthyl lactate, N-ethyl 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanecarboxamide, N-[(ethoxycarbonyl)methyl)-p-menthane-3-carboxamide and (1R,2S,5R)—N-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-methyl-2-(1-methylethyl)cyclohexanecarboxamide.

. The pharmaceutical liquid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the viscosity enhancing agent is selected from the group consisting of carboxymethylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose and mixtures thereof, xanthan gum, carrageenan, locust bean gum and guar gum.

. The pharmaceutical liquid composition according to claim 3 , wherein the viscosity enhancing agent is selected from the group consisting of carboxymethylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellulose and mixtures thereof.

. The pharmaceutical liquid composition according to claim 3 , wherein the viscosity enhancing agent is carboxymethylcellulose.

- 7 . (canceled)

. The pharmaceutical liquid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of decongestants, antihistamines, mucolytics, expectorants, demulcents, analgesics and antacids.

. A method of alleviating a symptom selected from the group consisting of cough, nasal congestion, allergy and sore throat in a subject comprising administering a pharmaceutical liquid composition according to claim 1 .

. The method of claim 9 , wherein the symptom is allergy.

. The pharmaceutical liquid composition according to claim 8 , wherein the active ingredient is antihistamine.

. The pharmaceutical liquid composition according to claim 11 , wherein the antihistamine is cetirizine.

. The pharmaceutical liquid composition according to claim 2 , wherein the cooling agent is menthyl glutarate.
