Abstract

A computing device collects, during an initial portion of a charging session of an electric vehicle (EV), a plurality of samples indicative of an amount of charge transferred from an EV charger to the EV during a respective time interval; constructs, using the collected plurality of samples, an estimated charge profile for the EV; selects, from among a plurality of prestored charge profiles, a prestored charge profile similar to the estimated charge profile; and adjusts a charge parameter and/or a time estimate associated with the charging session using the selected prestored charge profile.

Claims (27)

1 . A method implemented in a computing device, the method comprising:

collecting, during an initial portion of a charging session of an electric vehicle (EV), a plurality of samples, each of the plurality of samples indicative of an amount of charge transferred from an EV charger to the EV during a respective time interval;

constructing, using the collected plurality of samples, an estimated charge profile for the EV;

selecting, from among a plurality of prestored charge profiles, a prestored charge profile similar to the estimated charge profile; and

adjusting a charge parameter and/or a time estimate associated with the charging session using the selected prestored charge profile.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of samples is further indicative of an amount of charge requested by the EV during the respective time interval.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of samples is further indicative of a state of charge (SOC) of a battery of the EV during the respective time interval.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of samples is further indicative of a state of charge (SOC) of a battery of the EV charger during the respective time interval.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the prestored charge profile indicates a change the SOC of the EV during a time period longer than the initial portion of a charging session.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the prestored charge profile indicates how a power output of the EV charger varies with changes in the SOC of the EV.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of prestored charge profiles correspond to vehicles of different makes and models.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of prestored charge profiles correspond to different ambient conditions.

9 . A system comprising:

an electric vehicle (EV) charger configured to collect, during an initial portion of a charging session of an EV, a plurality of samples indicative of an amount of charge transferred from the EV charger to the EV during a respective time interval; and

a computing device configured to:

construct, using the collected plurality of samples, an estimated charge profile for the EV,

select, from among a plurality of prestored charge profiles, a prestored charge profile similar to the estimated charge profile, and

cause the EV charger to adjust a charge parameter and/or a time estimate associated with the charging session using the selected prestored charge profile.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of samples is further indicative of an amount of charge requested by the EV during the respective time interval.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of samples is further indicative of a state of charge (SOC) of a battery of the EV during the respective time interval.

12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of samples is further indicative of a state of charge (SOC) of a battery of the EV charger during the respective time interval.

13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the prestored charge profile indicates a change the SOC of the EV during a time period longer than the initial portion of a charging session.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the prestored charge profile indicates how a power output of the EV charger varies with changes in the SOC of the EV.

15 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of prestored charge profiles correspond to vehicles of different makes and models.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of prestored charge profiles correspond to different ambient conditions.

17 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the computing device is implemented in the EV charger.

18 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the computing device is implemented in a system controller external to the EV charger.
