Abstract

In one implementation, a method of using image data to enroll devices into security systems includes authenticating a user in a device enrollment function of a security system; initiating, by the device enrollment function, an image-based device enrollment session upon authentication of the user; identifying, during the image-based device enrollment session, a device to be enrolled into the security system; determining, during the image-based device enrollment session, a location of the device within the premises of the security system; enrolling the device into the security system.

Claims (54)

1. A method of enrolling devices into security systems, the method comprising:

authenticating a user in a device enrollment function of a security system of a premises;

initiating, by the device enrollment function, a security device enrollment session upon authentication of the user and in response to detecting, by the security system, an unenrolled security device at the premises;

identifying, during the security device enrollment session, the unenrolled security device, by:

operating the security system in a listen mode to receive and record wireless transmissions produced by the unenrolled security device;

evaluating the recorded wireless transmissions using a rule set that embodies various types of wireless transmissions generated by various types of security devices in an operating environment; and

generating, based on the evaluating, an assessment of a type of security device for the unenrolled security device that produced the recorded wireless transmissions;

determining, during the security device enrollment session, a location of the unenrolled security device at the premises of the security system; and

based at least in part on the generated assessment regarding the type of security device, enrolling the unenrolled security device into the security system as a qualified security device, by (i) adding the qualified security device to a set of qualified security devices of the security system, and (ii) associating the qualified security device with the determined location and the generated assessment of the type of security device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein authenticating the user includes:

obtaining a biometric feature of the user by scanning the user using at least one of a webcam, a smartphone, or a camera that is part of the security system;

comparing the biometric feature of the user to stored biometric information; and

authenticating the user upon determining a match between the biometric feature of the user and the stored biometric information.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the biometric feature is a facial scan, a fingerprint scan, a retinal scan, or a voice print.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the unenrolled security device includes scanning the unenrolled security device by at least one of a webcam, a smartphone, or a camera that is part of the security system.

The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the unenrolled security device includes determining a unique device identifier of the unenrolled security device by performing at least one of an optical scan of a bar code of the unenrolled security device, receiving an RFID signal from an RFID embedded in the unenrolled security device, or identifying a MAC address of the unenrolled security device.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

providing, for presentation to the user at a user device, enrollment information about the unenrolled security device being enrolled, the enrollment information including the type of security device, a function of the unenrolled security device, the unique device identifier of the unenrolled security device, and a description of the determined location of the unenrolled security device; and

enrolling the unenrolled security device into the security system after verification, by the user, of the enrollment information.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the location of the unenrolled security device includes:

identifying a location of a room or an area containing the unenrolled security device using a known reference point location and a direction of a line-of-site to the unenrolled security device from a scanning device; and

determining, using triangulation, the location of the unenrolled security device based on locations and signal strengths of two or more security devices registered with the security system.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using the qualified security device within the security system.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device enrollment function is part of a wireless gateway used in the security system.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing, for presentation to the user at a user device, an enrollment interface that includes (i) information that identifies the unenrolled security device being enrolled, and (ii) a prompt to trip the unenrolled security device; and

receiving, by the security system, an indication that the unenrolled security device has been tripped, wherein the unenrolled security device is enrolled into the security system as the qualified security device in response to receiving the indication.

11. A security system with one or more processors, memory, and storage devices storing instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to perform operations for enrolling devices into security systems, the operations comprising:

authenticating a user in a device enrollment function of a security system of a premises;

initiating, by the device enrollment function, a security device enrollment session upon authentication of the user and in response to detecting, by the security system, an unenrolled security device at the premises;

identifying, during the security device enrollment session, the unenrolled security device, by:

operating the security system in a listen mode to receive and record wireless transmissions produced by the unenrolled security device;

evaluating the recorded wireless transmissions using a rule set that embodies various types of wireless transmissions generated by various types of security devices in an operating environment; and

generating, based on the evaluating, an assessment of a type of security device for the unenrolled security device that produced the recorded wireless transmissions;

determining, during the security device enrollment session, a location of the unenrolled security device at the premises of the security system; and

based at least in part on the generated assessment regarding the type of security device, enrolling the unenrolled security device into the security system as a qualified security device, by (i) adding the qualified security device to a set of qualified security devices of the security system, and (ii) associating the qualified security device with the determined location and the generated assessment of the type of security device.

12. The system of claim 11 , the operations further comprising:

providing, for presentation to the user at a user device, an enrollment interface that includes (i) information that identifies the unenrolled security device being enrolled, and (ii) a prompt to trip the unenrolled security device; and

receiving, by the security system, an indication that the unenrolled security device has been tripped, wherein the unenrolled security device is enrolled into the security system as the qualified security device in response to receiving the indication.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein authenticating the user includes:

obtaining a biometric feature of the user by scanning the user using at least one of a webcam, a smartphone, or a camera that is part of the security system;

comparing the biometric feature of the user to stored biometric information; and

authenticating the user upon determining a match between the biometric feature of the user and the stored biometric information.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the biometric feature is a facial scan, a fingerprint scan, a retinal scan, or a voice print.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein identifying the unenrolled security device includes scanning the unenrolled security device by at least one of a webcam, a smartphone, or a camera that is part of the security system.

The system of claim 11 , wherein identifying the unenrolled security device includes determining a unique device identifier of the unenrolled security device by performing at least one of an optical scan of a bar code of the unenrolled security device, receiving an RFID signal from an RFID embedded in the unenrolled security device, or identifying a MAC address of the unenrolled security device.

17. The system of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

providing, for presentation to the user at a user device, enrollment information about the unenrolled security device being enrolled, the enrollment information including the type of security device, a function of the unenrolled security device, the unique device identifier of the unenrolled security device, and a description of the determined location of the unenrolled security device; and

enrolling the unenrolled security device into the security system after verification, by the user, of the enrollment information.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining the location of the unenrolled security device includes:

identifying a location of a room or an area containing the unenrolled security device using a known reference point location and a direction of a line-of-site to the unenrolled security device from a scanning device; and

determining, using triangulation, the location of the unenrolled security device based on locations and signal strengths of two or more security devices registered with the security system.

19. The system of claim 11 , the operations further comprising using the qualified security device within the security system.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the device enrollment function is part of a wireless gateway used in the security system.
