Abstract

Systems and methods are described to address deficiencies in conventional biometric devices by dynamically enabling and disabling a biometric device based on the content the user is viewing. The media guidance application may utilize a device enablement rule, which has content criteria. If the content criteria is satisfied, the media guidance application may enable or disable a biometric device in accordance with the device enablement rule.

Claims (48)

1 . A method comprising:

identifying a content item being provided via user equipment for consumption by a user;

determining an expected range of user biometric responses for the content item, wherein the determining the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item comprises:

determining that the content item currently satisfies a device enablement rule that corresponds to a content type of the content item, wherein the device enablement rule specifies a biometric device and comprises content criteria for acquiring biometric information from the biometric device; and

retrieving, from the device enablement rule, the expected range of user biometric responses; and

acquiring, from the biometric device, a biometric response of the user, wherein the acquiring, from the biometric device, the biometric response of the user comprises:

temporarily activating the biometric device while the content being accessed continues to satisfy the device enablement rule; and

measuring a biometric response of the user to the content being accessed while the biometric device is activated;

determining that the biometric response of the user is outside of the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item; and

generating for display an augmented reality view comprising augmented reality content related to the content item to produce a change to the biometric response of the user.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user equipment is an augmented reality headset, and the biometric device is the augmented reality headset.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user equipment is an augmented reality headset, and the biometric device is a separate device distinct from the augmented reality headset.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein acquiring, from the biometric device, the biometric response of the user further comprises:

storing a start time and an end time of a portion of the content item; and

acquiring the biometric response of the user while a progression point is between the start time and the end time.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item comprises retrieving an average biometric response of a plurality of users to the content item.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining that the biometric response of the user is outside of the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item comprises determining that a heart rate of the user is lower than an expected range of user heart rates for the content item.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item is based on a genre of the content item.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

activating a speaker device to generate sounds associated with a genre of the content to produce a change to the biometric response of the user.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

monitoring, at the biometric device, for changes in the biometric response of the user; and

determining whether to generate additional augmented reality content to produce a change to the biometric response of the user.

10 . A system comprising:

memory;

control circuitry configured to:

identify a content item being provided via user equipment for consumption by a user;

determine an expected range of user biometric responses for the content item by:

determining that the content item currently satisfies a device enablement rule that corresponds to a content type of the content item, wherein the device enablement rule is stored in the memory and specifies a biometric device and comprises content criteria for acquiring biometric information from the biometric device; and

retrieving, from the device enablement rule, the expected range of user biometric responses;

acquire, from the biometric device, a biometric response of the user by:

temporarily activating the biometric device while the content being accessed continues to satisfy the device enablement rule; and

measuring a biometric response of the user to the content being accessed while the biometric device is activated;

determine that the biometric response of the user is outside of the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item; and

provide for display an augmented reality view comprising augmented reality content related to the content item to produce a change to the biometric response of the user.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the user equipment is an augmented reality headset, and the biometric device is the augmented reality headset.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the user equipment is an augmented reality headset, and the biometric device is a separate device distinct from the augmented reality headset.

13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to acquire, from the biometric device, the biometric response of the user by:

storing a start time and an end time of a portion of the content item; and

acquiring the biometric response of the user while a progression point is between the start time and the end time.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item by retrieving an average biometric response of a plurality of users to the content item.

15 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine that the biometric response of the user is outside of the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item by determining that a heart rate of the user is lower than an expected range of user heart rates for the content item.

16 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the expected range of user biometric responses for the content item based on a genre of the content item.

17 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

activate a speaker device to generate sounds associated with a genre of the content to produce a change to the biometric response of the user.

18 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

monitor, at the biometric device, for changes in the biometric response of the user;

determine whether to generate additional augmented reality content to produce a change to the biometric response of the user.
