Abstract

The disclosure provides co-extruded, multi-layer films, including metallized barrier films and non-barrier films, and articles of manufacture that include the films, such as flexible bags and containers for flowable materials. The films and articles that include the films have good heat retention, and barrier properties, as well as good flex-crak resistance and toughness. The films and articles that include the films have a metallized barrier core layer of ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer wherein both the metal and EVOH are in amounts that achieve the heat retention, flex-crack resistance, toughness, and barrier properties, while allowing for the recycling of the films and articles of manufacture.

Claims (25)

1. A recyclable bag having a metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film comprising:

(i) an inner sealant layer comprising an ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer fraction having a density in the range of 0.894 to 0.924 g/cm 3 in an amount of at least about 40-50% by weight or thickness of the total inner sealant layer;

(ii) a core barrier layer comprising ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) comprising about 0.1% to about 10% by total weight or thickness of the metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film, wherein the EVOH comprises from about 27-55 mol % ethylene in the EVOH copolymer; and

(iii) an outer metallized sealant layer comprising a polyethylene polymer, a polyethylene copolymer, or an ethylene/a-olefin interpolymer, having a density in the range of 0.894 to 0.935 g/cm 3 , in an amount of at least about 40-50% by weight or thickness of the total outer metallized sealant layer, and a material that increases metal adhesion.

2. The recyclable bag of claim 1 , wherein the material that increases metal adhesion is ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA).

3. The recyclable bag of claim 1 , wherein the metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film has an OTR below 0.5 cc/100 in 2 /day when tested at 23° C. and a relative humidity between 60% and 90%.

4. The recyclable bag of claim 1 , wherein the metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film has an OTR below 0.4 cc/100 in 2 /day when tested at 23° C. and a relative humidity of 90%.

5. The recyclable bag of claim 1 , wherein the EVOH comprises about 5% or less of the total thickness of the recyclable bag.

6. The recyclable bag of claim 5 , wherein the EVOH comprises about 2.5% or less of the total thickness of the recyclable bag.

7. The recyclable bag of claim 1 , wherein the outer metallized sealant layer comprises a thin layer of aluminum.

8. The recyclable bag of claim 7 , wherein the thin layer of aluminum does not exceed 0.1% of the total thickness of the metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film.

9. The recyclable bag of claim 1 , wherein the metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film further comprises first and second interposed layers,

each of the first and second interposed layers comprising a copolymer or an ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer fraction having a density in the range of 0.894 to 0.924 g/cm 3 in an amount of at least about 50% by weight or thickness of the interposed layer, and an optional adhesive or tie resin in an amount effective to improve adhesion of the interposed layer to at least one other layer in the metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film.

10. The recyclable bag of claim 9 , wherein the a metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film comprises at least two identical core barrier layers, wherein the first of the at least two core barrier layers is adjacent to the first interposed layer and the second of the at least two core barrier layers is adjacent to the second interposed layer, and

wherein the at least two core barrier layers are separated from each other by at least one layer comprising an ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer with an optional tie resin.

11. The recyclable bag of claim 1 , wherein the metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film comprises a first ply of a two-ply film structure.

12. The recyclable bag of claim 11 , wherein the first ply and the second ply are joined together only at edges of the first and second plies.

13. The recyclable bag of claim 11 , wherein a second ply of the two-ply film structure comprises a non-barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film, the metallized barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film being an outer ply and the non-barrier co-extruded multi-layer polymeric film being an inner ply.

14. The recyclable bag of claim 1 , wherein the recyclable bag comprises a first wall and a second wall, the first and second walls being sealed along perimeter edges to define an interior volume for containing a flowable material; and a dispensing spout or fitment sealed to one of the first and second walls.

15. The recyclable bag of claim 14 , wherein, when the interior volume of the recyclable bag is filled with liquid having a temperature of about 180° F., the temperature of the liquid after four hours is at least about 130° F.

16. The recyclable bag of claim 14 , further comprising a flowable material within the interior volume of the bag.

17. The recyclable bag of claim 16 , wherein the flowable material is a hot beverage product.

18. The recyclable bag of claim 17 , wherein the hot beverage product is coffee.

19. A bag-in-box container comprising the recyclable bag of claim 16 .

20. The bag-in-box container of claim 19 , further comprising a dispensing tap or service line connector fitted to the dispensing spout or fitment of the recyclable bag.
