Abstract

Systems and methods for improved user experience with rechargers for implantable medical devices. An external charging device for providing power to a rechargeable implantable device can determine a firmware state of the external charging device during recharging of the rechargeable implantable device, display a searching indication using a light indicator when the firmware state is determined to be in a searching state, display a charging indication using the light indicator when the firmware state is determined to be a charging state, and display an error indication using the light indicator when the firmware state is determined to be an error state. An optional user device application can provide complementary graphical user interfaces according to the firmware states.

Claims (29)

1 . A method for commanding a first hardware device for specialized programming with a second hardware device, the second hardware device having a single binary actuator, the method comprising:

operably coupling the second hardware device to a power source;

activating the single binary actuator for a first duration;

activating the single binary actuator for a second duration;

activating the single binary actuator for a third duration;

uncoupling the second hardware device from the power source; and

transmitting a specialized programming command from the second hardware device to the first hardware device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first hardware device is an implantable medical device and the second hardware device is a recharger.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the specialized programming command is a hardware reset of the implantable medical device.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the specialized programming command is a firmware reset of the implantable medical device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first duration is between 0.25 and 3.0 seconds to enter a first state, in a sequence of states for entering a special clinician mode for transmitting the specialized programming command.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the second duration is between 0.25 and 3.0 seconds to enter a second state, in the sequence of states for entering the special clinician mode for transmitting the specialized programming command.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the third duration is between 3.0 and 7.0 seconds to enter a third state, in the sequence of states for entering the special clinician mode for transmitting the specialized programming command.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, prior to transmitting the specialized programming command, activating a countdown state, wherein a countdown tone or sequence of lights are emitted from the second hardware device indicating to a clinician that transmitting of the specialized programming command will commence.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein activating the single binary actuator for a third duration provides a visual marker to a clinician, via one or more one light emitting diodes (LEDs) coupled to the second hardware device, wherein the visual marker indicates to the clinician that a correct sequence has been entered by actuating the single binary actuator to enter a clinician mode and enable transmission of the specialized programming command.

10 . An external charging device for providing power to a rechargeable implantable device, the external charging device comprising:

a housing;

a single button arranged in the housing;

an indicator light illuminating the single button, the indicator light comprising at least one light emitting diode (LED); and

a processor and a memory operably coupled to the processor,

wherein the processor is configured to enter the external charging device in a special clinician mode of operations in response to activation of the single button by a clinician in a sequence of operations, wherein, once the sequence of operations has been entered, the processor is further configured to transmit a specialized programming command from the external charging device to the rechargeable implantable device,

wherein the sequence of operations includes to activate the single button for a first duration, to activate the single button for a second duration, and to activate the single button for a third duration.

11 . The external charging device of claim 10 , wherein a conditional hardware state is required prior to entering the sequence of operations to enter the special mode of operations.

12 . The external charging device of claim 11 , wherein the conditional hardware state is to couple the second hardware device to a charging dock.

13 . The external charging device of claim 10 , wherein the first duration is between 0.25 and 3.0 seconds to enter a first state, in a sequence of states to enter the special clinician mode to transmit the specialized programming command.

14 . The external charging device of claim 10 , wherein the second duration is between 0.25 and 3.0 seconds to enter a second state, in the sequence of states to enter the special clinician mode to transmit the specialized programming command.

15 . The external charging device of claim 10 , wherein the third duration is between 3.0 and 7.0 seconds to enter a third state, in the sequence of states to enter the special clinician mode to transmit the specialized programming command.

16 . The external charging device of claim 10 , wherein the specialized programming command is a hardware reset of the implantable medical device.

17 . The external charging device of claim 10 , wherein the specialized programming command is a firmware reset of the implantable medical device.
