Abstract

Apparatus for controlling motion of liquid droplets. A set of electrode pads is arranged to define one or more tracks over which liquid droplets may be induced to move over a sequence of the electrode pads. A surface over the electrode pads is dielectric, smooth, and slippery to the droplets. In some cases, the smooth surface is formed as a thin layer of a second liquid that is immiscible with the liquid of the droplets. The surface has wetting affinity to the liquid that can be individually varied in a controlled manner by application of voltage to respective electrode pads. A control is designed to alter the wetting characteristic of varying-wettability portions of the surface over respective electrode pads to effect induced motion of the droplets over the surface. The apparatus is designed with the smooth hydrophobic surface open, with no overlying or facing electrode or plate above the droplets.

Claims (41)

1 . A device for processing a droplet comprising a biological sample, the device comprising:

a frame comprising:

i. one or more edges; and

ii. one or more dielectric films comprising one or more active areas;

wherein the one or more dielectric films are attached to the frame at the one or more edges, and the frame is configured to mechanically hold the one or more dielectric films over an array of electrodes.

2 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising the array of electrodes.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises four edges.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises four dielectric films.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein each of the dielectric films comprises an active area of the one or more active areas.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the electrodes are configured to supply an electric field.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein an active area of the one or more active areas is associated with a subset of the array of electrodes.

8 . A method for processing a droplet comprising a biological sample on a device,

wherein the device comprises:

i. a plurality of electrodes configured to supply an electric field:

ii. a dielectric disposed adjacent to said plurality of electrodes, wherein the dielectric is mechanically held over the plurality of electrodes;

iii. a gap filling material disposed adjacent to two of more of the plurality of electrodes; and

iv. a controller operatively coupled to the set of electrodes, and

wherein the method comprises:

dispensing the droplet onto the array; and

actuating at least a subset of the plurality of electrodes to supply the electric field.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the device further comprises a liquid layer disposed adjacent to the dielectric, wherein the liquid layer is configured to support the droplet.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein:

a. the dielectric is planarized;

b. the liquid layer is planarized; and/or

c. the gap filling material and the two or more adjacent electrodes generate a planarized surface.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the dielectric is a different material than the gap filling material.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the gap filling material is liquid.

13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the device does not have an overlying plate.

14 . A device for processing a droplet comprising a biological sample, comprising:

a. a plurality of electrodes configured to supply an electric field:

b. a dielectric disposed adjacent to said plurality of electrodes, wherein:

i. the dielectric is mechanically held over the plurality of electrodes,

ii. the dielectric forms a surface configured for the droplet to ride on the surface,

1. wherein the droplet, when riding on the surface, is substantially surrounded by air and not substantially surrounded by liquid; and

c. a controller operatively coupled to the set of electrodes.

15 . The device of claim 14 , further comprising a gap filling material disposed adjacent to two of more of the plurality of electrodes, wherein the gap filling material and the two or more adjacent electrodes generate a planarized surface.

16 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the dielectric further comprises a lubricant.

17 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the dielectric is a different material than the gap filling material.

18 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the gap filling material is liquid.

19 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the device does not have an overlying plate.

20 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the dielectric forms an electrical barrier between the plurality of electrodes and the droplet.
