Abstract

The disclosed technology relates to features that enable a user to operate a smartphone as a webcam for a computer. In one example, a smartphone is attached to a computer display, such as a laptop monitor or a flatscreen monitor, with a camera of the smartphone facing the user. The computer can detect the presence of the smartphone and trigger the smartphone and computer to pair with each other, e.g., by a Bluetooth handshake. The computer can then stream video captured by smartphone for a video call.

Claims (54)

1 . A method for causing a computer to operate a smartphone as a webcam for a video call in which the computer is a first participant, the method comprising:

detecting presence of the smartphone in proximity to the computer based on a sensor of the computer,

wherein the smartphone includes a camera configured to capture video;

in response to detecting the presence of the smartphone in proximity to the computer, triggering wireless pairing of the computer and the smartphone over a local network;

configuring the smartphone to operate as a webcam of the computer and stream to the computer, over the local network, the video captured by the camera of the smartphone;

detecting initiation of a video call over a wide area network between the computer and a device of a second participant; and

in response to detecting the initiation of the video call, causing the computer to stream through the computer and over the wide area network to the device of the second participant of the video call, the video captured from the smartphone.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

initiating an artificial intelligence (AI) optimization mode configured to render a higher quality of the video for the video call.

3 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

causing the smartphone to switch between a wider field of view and a zoomed view while streaming the video to the computer.

4 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

causing the smartphone to modify the video for optical image stabilization, digital image stabilization, or image processing.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the local network comprises a Bluetooth network and the wide area network comprises the Internet.

6 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

configuring the smartphone to stream audio captured by a microphone of the smartphone to the computer for the video call.

7 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

causing a display of the smartphone to display the video captured by the camera of the smartphone; and

causing a display of the computer to mirror the display of the smartphone including the video captured by the camera of the smartphone.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein configuring the smartphone to operate as the webcam comprises:

causing the smartphone to stream the video in response to detecting a change in light by an ambient light sensor of the computer.

9 . A non-transitory storage medium storing instructions, which, when executed by one or more processors, cause a system to:

detect presence of a smartphone in proximity to a computer based on a sensor of the computer,

wherein the smartphone includes a camera configured to capture video;

in response to detecting the presence of the smartphone in proximity to the computer, wirelessly couple the computer and the smartphone over a first network;

configure the smartphone to operate as a webcam for the computer to stream the video captured by the camera of the smartphone over the first network to the computer; and

cause the computer to communicate the video captured by the smartphone over a second network.

10 . The non-transitory storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the system is further caused to:

initiate a video call over the second network with a receiving computer; and

cause the computer to communicate the video streamed over the first network from the smartphone to the receiving computer over the first network.

11 . The non-transitory storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the first network is a local area network comprising a Bluetooth network and the second network is a wide area network comprising the Internet.

12 . A method for operating a smartphone as a webcam, the method comprising:

detecting presence of the smartphone in proximity to a computer based on a sensor of the computer,

wherein the smartphone includes a camera configured to capture video;

in response to detecting the presence of the smartphone in proximity to the computer:

establishing a connection between the computer and the smartphone over a local network; and

configuring the smartphone to operate as a webcam that streams the video captured by the camera of the smartphone through the computer to a recipient device;

detecting a video call between the computer and the recipient computer over a wide area network; and

in response to detecting the video call, causing the computer to stream the video captured from the smartphone over a wide area network to the recipient computer.

13 . The method of claim 12 further comprising:

initiating an artificial intelligence (Al) optimization mode configured to render a higher quality feed of the video for the video call.

14 . The method of claim 12 further comprising:

causing the smartphone to switch between a wider field of view and a zoomed view while streaming the video to the computer.

15 . The method of claim 12 further comprising:

causing the smartphone to perform optical image stabilization, digital image stabilization, or image processing of the video.

16 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the local network comprises a Bluetooth network and the wide area network comprises the Internet.

17 . The method of claim 12 further comprising:

configuring the smartphone to stream audio captured by a microphone of the smartphone to the computer for the video call.

18 . The method of claim 12 further comprising:

causing a display of the smartphone configured as a webcam to display the video captured by the camera of the smartphone.

19 . The method of claim 18 further comprising:

causing a display of the computer to mirror the display of the smartphone including the video captured by the camera of the smartphone.

20 . The method of claim 12 , wherein configuring the smartphone to operate as the webcam comprises:

streaming the video from the smartphone to the computer in response to detecting a change in ambient light by a sensor of the computer.
