Abstract

A medication delivery system having a holding chamber capable of delivering dosages of medicament from a metered dose inhaler. The holding chamber includes an actuator detector, flow detector and display. In another embodiment, a medication delivery system includes a holding chamber having an input and an output end, a metered dose inhaler operably coupled to the input end of the holding chamber, and a metered dose inhaler identifier associated with the holding chamber and operable to identify the metered dose inhaler coupled to the holding chamber.

Claims (34)

1 - 61 . (canceled)

62 . A medication delivery system comprising:

a holding chamber having an input and an output end;

a backpiece coupled to the input end, the backpiece comprising:

a processor;

one or more sensors configured to measure inhalation characteristics; and

a feedback device operable to provide feedback information to a user;

a remote server; and

a local computing device;

wherein the processor wirelessly communicates data regarding the inhalation characteristics to the remote server and/or the local computing device, wherein the remote server and/or local computing device analyzes the data and provides feedback information to the processor and/or local computing device, wherein the feedback information is displayed on the feedback device and/or the local computing device to inform a user about their inhalation technique.

63 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 wherein the inhalation characteristics comprise an inhalation airflow and/or an actuation of a metered dose inhaler associated with the backpiece.

64 . The medication delivery system of claim 63 wherein the one or more sensors comprise a flow sensor.

65 . The medication delivery system of claim 64 wherein the flow sensor comprises one or more of a pressure sensor, a venturi, a pitot static tube, a microphone, a light source and photodetector, and/or an infrared photodetector.

66 . The medication delivery system of claim 64 wherein the one or more sensors further comprises an actuation detection sensor.

67 . The medication delivery system of claim 66 wherein the actuation detection sensor comprises one or more of a temperature sensor, a microphone and/or a force sensor.

68 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 wherein the feedback device is configured to provide visual, audible and/or haptic feedback to the user based on the feedback information and/or one or more of the inhalation characteristics, wherein the feedback device is configured to provide the feedback to the user in real time.

69 . The medication delivery system of claim 68 wherein the feedback device comprises a plurality of LEDs located on the backpiece.

70 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 further comprising a metered dose inhaler identifier operable to identify the type of metered dose inhaler associated with the holding chamber.

71 . The medication delivery system of claim 66 further comprising an inhalation signal operable to signal to the user that inhalation may be initiated.

72 . The medication delivery system of claim 71 further comprising a timer interfacing between the actuation detector sensor and the inhalation signal and operable to initiate the inhalation signal.

73 . The medication delivery system of claim 66 further comprising a timer interfacing between the actuation detector sensor and the flow sensor.

74 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 wherein the backpiece further comprises a timer configured to measure the breath-hold duration of the user.

75 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 wherein the holding chamber and/or backpiece comprises a metered dose inhaler insertion detector configured to detect the insertion of the metered dose inhaler in the backpiece.

76 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 wherein the holding chamber and/or backpiece further comprises a breath hold detector configured to determine the duration of the user's breath hold.

77 . The medication delivery system of claim 76 wherein the breath hold detector includes one or more of a carbon dioxide detector, a pressure sensor, a microphone, a humidity sensor, a temperature sensor, and/or a light curtain.

78 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 wherein the holding chamber and/or backpiece further comprises an end of treatment detector operable to detect the end of treatment for the user.

79 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 wherein the holding chamber and/or backpiece further comprises an exceeded maximum flow feedback device.

80 . The medication delivery system of claim 62 further comprising a metered dose inhaler operably coupled to the backpiece.

81 . The medication delivery system of claim 70 wherein the metered dose inhaler identifier comprises a color sensing device configured to collect color information from the metered dose inhaler and/or an aerosol plume emitted therefrom.

82 . The medication delivery system of claim 70 wherein the metered dose inhaler identifier comprises a mouthpiece detection device operable to collect information about the shape or length of a mouthpiece of the metered dose inhaler.

83 . The medication delivery system of claim 70 wherein the metered dose inhaler identifier comprises an image processor and/or RFID reader and the metered dose inhaler comprises a label.

84 . The medication delivery system of claim 70 wherein the metered dose inhaler identifier analyzes one or more of a sound, temperature, color, infrared and/or ultraviolet spectroscopy, capacitance and/or flow of an aerosol plume emitted from the metered dose inhaler.

85 . The medication delivery system of claim 70 wherein the metered dose inhaler identifier comprises a force sensitive resistor operable to record the force at MDI actuation.

86 . The medication delivery system of claim 70 wherein the metered dose inhaler identifier comprises an infrared emitter and detector.
