Abstract

Unitary endoscopic vessel harvesting devices are disclosed. In some embodiments, such devices comprise an elongated body having a proximal end and a distal end, a tip disposed at the distal end of the elongated body; and a cutting unit having a first cutting portion and a second cutting portion, the first cutting portion and the second cutting portion being moveable in a longitudinal direction relative to the elongated body to capture a blood vessel between the first cutting portion and the second cutting portion, and being rotatable relative to one another circumferentially about the tip to cut the captured blood vessel.

Claims (21)

1 . A surgical device comprising:

an elongated body having a dissection tip disposed at a distal end of the elongated body;

at least one end effector moveable from a retracted position proximal to the dissection tip to an extended position over the dissection tip, and

a sleeve having a one end disposed around the elongated body and an opposing end disposed around the dissection tip to provide a relatively smooth transition between the dissection tip and the elongated body, the sleeve designed to permit the at least one end effector to move from the retracted position to the extended position.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the dissection tip minimizes visual distortion when viewing from within the tip outward.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve is flexible.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve is attached at the proximal end to the elongated body.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve creates a seal between the elongated body and the dissection tip.

6 . The device of claim 5 , wherein the seal prevents tissue or bodily fluids from entering the elongated body.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one end effector can be repeatedly extended and retracted without damaging the sleeve.

8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve is coated in a lubricious substance.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the lubricious substance reduces friction between the at least one end effector and the sleeve as the at least one end effector is moved.

10 . A method for capturing a vessel, the method comprising:

advancing, through tissue to a vessel harvesting site, an elongated body having a dissection tip and a sleeve bridging a transition between the elongated body and the dissection tip to minimize any damage to tissue thereby;

extending an end effector from a position proximal to the dissection tip distally to a position over the dissection tip while deflecting the sleeve disposed around the transition; and

moving the end effector along a circumferential path about the dissection tip to capture the vessel.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, in the step of advancing, the dissection tip is conical.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, in the step of advancing, the sleeve is flexible.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, in the step of advancing, the sleeve creates a seal between the elongated body and the dissection tip.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, in the step of advancing, the sleeve is coated in a lubricious substance which reduces friction between the end effector and the sleeve as the end effector is moved.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, in the step of moving, the end effector moves circumferentially about a central axis defined by the elongated body.
