Abstract

The present invention relates to methods and devices for providing microbial control and/or disinfection/remediation of an environment. The methods generally comprise generating a Purified Hydrogen Peroxide Gas (PHPG) that is substantially free of, e.g., hydration, ozone, plasma species, and/or organic species; and directing the gas comprising primarily PHPG into the environment such that the PHPG acts to provide microbial control and/or disinfection/remediation in the environment, preferably both on surfaces and in the air.

Claims (30)

1 . An apparatus for producing purified hydrogen peroxide gas (PHPG) from humid ambient air comprising:

an interior space;

one or more inlet openings for directing a stream of humid ambient air into the interior space;

one or more outlet openings for discharging the PHPG formed by the apparatus into a surrounding environment, wherein the apparatus defines an air flow pathway between the inlet openings and the outlet openings through at least a portion of the interior space;

a catalyst substrate structure located in a portion of the air flow pathway, wherein the catalyst substrate structure comprises at least one photocatalyst; and

a UV light source for irradiating and activating at least a portion of the photocatalyst to provide an activated photocatalyst for the stream of humid ambient air transversing the air flow pathway to produce the PHPG,

wherein said outlet openings are configured to direct the PHPG out of said interior space and into the surrounding environment when the apparatus is in operation.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst substrate structure comprises an air-permeable substrate coated on at least one surface with the photocatalyst.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst substrate structure is located within the air flow pathway and oriented substantially perpendicular thereto.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus further comprises a vented outer covering defining the interior space and wherein the UV light source is located within the vented outer covering.

5 . The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein at least one surface of the vented outer covering is coated with at least a portion of the photocatalyst to define at least a portion of the catalyst substrate structure.

6 . The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the catalyst substrate structure is located within the interior space defined by the vented outer covering.

7 . The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the vented outer covering comprises a material chosen from a polymer material, a ceramic material, a porcelain material, or combinations thereof.

8 . The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the inlet openings comprise a plurality of inlet vents formed in an inlet surface of the vented outer covering configured to admit the stream of humid ambient air into the interior space.

9 . The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the outlet openings comprise a plurality of outlet vents in an outlet surface of the vented outer covering configured to discharge PHPG from the interior space to the surrounding environment.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising at least one fan for moving the stream of humid ambient air into and/or the PHPG out of the interior space.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the photocatalyst comprises a metal or metal oxide catalyst.

12 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the photocatalyst comprises titanium dioxide.

13 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the PHPG produced by the apparatus is substantially free of water, ozone, plasma species, and organic species.

14 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising at least one filter disposed in a portion of the air flow pathway for removing dust and organic components from the stream of humid ambient air.

15 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the UV light source is located in the interior space between the inlet openings and outlet openings of the apparatus.

16 . An apparatus for producing purified hydrogen peroxide gas (PHPG) from humid ambient air, the apparatus comprising:

at least one inlet partition and a least one outlet partition that define an interior space, wherein the at least one inlet partition comprises a plurality of inlet passages for permitting fluid flow communication between an exterior environment and the interior space, wherein the inlet passages are configured to admit the humid ambient air into the interior space, wherein the at least one outlet partition comprises a plurality of outlet passages for permitting fluid flow communication between the interior space and the exterior environment, wherein the outlet passages are configured to discharge at least a portion of the PHPG produced by the apparatus into the exterior environment; and

a UV light source located within the interior space,

wherein at least one surface of the at least one inlet partition and/or at least one surface of the at least one outlet partition comprises a photocatalyst loaded thereon, and

wherein the UV light source is configured to irradiate UV light onto the photocatalyst to provide an activated photocatalyst for contacting the humid ambient air transversing the plurality of inlet passages from the exterior environment into the interior space when the apparatus is in operation.

17 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the inlet partition and/or the outlet partition comprises a material chosen from a polymer material, a ceramic material, a porcelain material, or combinations thereof.

18 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the PHPG discharged from the apparatus is substantially free of each of water, ozone, plasma species, and organic species.

19 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the photocatalyst comprises titanium dioxide.

20 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein at least a portion of the inlet partition and/or the outlet partition are oriented substantially perpendicular to the direction of air flow through the interior space of the apparatus.
