Abstract

A resistance force is controlled such that a user's effort against the resistance force results in a first isokinetic seed movement. The resistance force required to effect the first isokinetic seed movement is associated with a force-velocity profile. It is determined whether a sufficient number of isokinetic seed movements have been performed by the user. In response to a determination that the sufficient number of isokinetic seed movements have been performed by the user, a strength determination of the user is made based on the isokinetic seed movements performed by the user.

Claims (32)

2 . An exercise machine, comprising:

a processor configured to:

make a strength determination of a user based on a plurality of repetitions of a first exercise performed by the user using the exercise machine;

make a starting weight recommendation for a second exercise to be performed using the exercise machine based on the strength determination of the user; and

recalibrate the exercise machine to recommend a different starting weight based on a performance of the user of the second exercise; and

a memory coupled to the processor and configured to provide the processor with instructions

3 . The exercise machine of claim 2 , wherein the first exercise targets a particular muscle group.

4 . The exercise machine of claim 3 , wherein the particular muscle group is a lower body muscle group, an upper body pushing muscle group, an upper body pulling muscle group, or a core muscle group.

5 . The exercise machine of claim 2 , wherein the first exercise is a seated lat pulldown, a seated overhead press, a bench press, or a deadlift.

6 . The exercise machine of claim 2 , further comprising a monitor configured to display the first exercise being performed.

7 . The exercise machine of claim 1 , wherein a resistance associated with the exercise machine is configured to dynamically change to match an applied force associated with the user performing the first exercise.

8 . The exercise machine of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of repetitions are used to determine a force-velocity plot.

9 . The exercise machine of claim 8 , wherein an intercept associated with the determined force-velocity plot is utilized to determine an estimated one rep maximum.

10 . The exercise machine of claim 9 , wherein the starting weight recommendation for the second exercise is based on the estimated one rep maximum.

11 . A method, comprising:

making a strength determination of a user based on a plurality of repetitions of a first exercise performed by the user using the exercise machine;

making a starting weight recommendation for a second exercise to be performed using the exercise machine based on the strength determination of the user; and

recalibrating an exercise machine to recommend a different starting weight based on a performance of the user of the second exercise.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first exercise targets a particular muscle group.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the particular muscle group is a lower body muscle group, an upper body pushing muscle group, an upper body pulling muscle group, or a core muscle group.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first exercise is a seated lat pulldown, a seated overhead press, a bench press, or a deadlift.

15 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising displaying the first exercise being performed.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of repetitions are used to determine a force-velocity plot.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein an intercept associated with the determined force-velocity plot is utilized to determine an estimated one rep maximum.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the starting weight recommendation for the second exercise is based on the estimated one rep maximum.

19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein a resistance associated with the exercise machine is configured to dynamically change to match an applied force associated with the user performing the first exercise.

20 . A computer program product, the computer program product being embodied in a non-transitory computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions for:

making a strength determination of a user based on a plurality of repetitions of a first exercise performed by the user using the exercise machine;

making a starting weight recommendation for a second exercise to be performed using the exercise machine based on the strength determination of the user; and

recalibrating an exercise machine to recommend a different starting weight based on a performance of the user of the second exercise.

21 . The computer program product of claim 20 , further comprising computer instructions for displaying the first exercise being performed.
