Abstract

A user may establish a reservation for content that is not currently available to the user via a group of sources, including broadcast, streaming, and/or download sources. For example the a user may establish a reservation to record a broadcast of specific content that is currently not scheduled for broadcast. As another example, the user may establish a reservation for the purpose of alerting the user once a new movie becomes available through a subscription streaming service. Based on a reservation, the service provider and/or the user's media playback device may monitor content availability data for one or more sources. When the content is indicated as available, the user may be so informed. The content may then be streamed or downloaded, or a recording of the content may be scheduled. Additionally, or alternatively, the content may be automatically scheduled for recording or download.

Claims (45)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving, from a device, a request to automatically store at least one of a plurality of future content items, wherein identity and availability of the plurality of future content items are not yet known, and wherein the request comprises an identifier of an actor;

based at least in part on the receiving the request, generating a reservation data object that defines at least one source to be monitored for availability of at least one content item of the plurality of future content items that comprises metadata identifying the actor;

monitoring content availability data of one or more sources at least in part by referencing the reservation data object to determine that a newly available content item from the one or more sources is scheduled to become available from the one or more sources at a particular time; and

based at least in part on the monitoring, causing, at the particular time, the newly available content to be accessible for playing via a user interface that indicates that the newly available content is available for playing from storage.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sources is selected from a list of approved sources specified by a user associated with the device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

obtaining a unique identifier corresponding to the newly available content item; and wherein monitoring the content availability data of the one or more sources comprises monitoring for the unique identifier.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the unique identifier is a combination of the unique identifier corresponding to the newly available content item with an identifier representing from which of the one or more sources the newly available content item is retrieved.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein monitoring the content availability data of the one or more sources comprises receiving periodic new content availability data from the one or more sources and monitoring the periodic new content availability data for the unique identifier.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the newly available content item will be available at least at a second particular time via the one or more sources; and

generating, via the user interface, a prompt for user input selecting which of the one or more sources or which of the particular time or second particular time the newly available content item is to be made accessible for playing.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata of the newly available content item comprises data other than the actor but is associated with the actor.

8 . A system comprising:

input/output circuitry configured to:

receive, from a device, a request to automatically store at least one of a plurality of future content items, wherein identity and availability of the plurality of future content items are not yet known, and wherein the request comprises an identifier of an actor; and

control circuitry configured to:

based at least in part on the receiving the request, generate a reservation data object that defines at least one source to be monitored for availability of at least one content item of the plurality of future content items that comprises metadata identifying the actor;

monitor content availability data of one or more sources at least in part by referencing the reservation data object to determine that a newly available content item from the one or more sources is scheduled to become available from the one or more sources at a particular time; and

based at least in part on the monitoring, cause, at the particular time, the newly available content to be accessible for playing via a user interface that indicates that the newly available content is available for playing from storage.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more sources is selected from a list of approved sources specified by a user associated with the device.

10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

obtain a unique identifier corresponding to the newly available content item; and wherein monitoring the content availability data of the one or more sources comprises monitoring for the unique identifier.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the unique identifier is a combination of the unique identifier corresponding to the newly available content item with an identifier representing from which of the one or more sources the newly available content item is retrieved.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein monitoring the content availability data of the one or more sources comprises receiving periodic new content availability data from the one or more sources and monitoring the periodic new content availability data for the unique identifier.

13 . The system of claim 8 ,

wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine that the newly available content item will be available at least at a second particular time via the one or more sources; and

wherein the input/output circuitry is further configured to:

generate, via the user interface, a prompt for user input selecting which of the one or more sources or which of the particular time or second particular time the newly available content item is to be made accessible for playing.

14 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the metadata of the newly available content item comprises data other than the actor but is associated with the actor.

15 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions encoded thereon that, when executed by control circuitry, cause the control circuitry to:

receive, from a device, a request to automatically store at least one of a plurality of future content items, wherein identity and availability of the plurality of future content items are not yet known, and wherein the request comprises an identifier of an actor;

based at least in part on the receiving the request, generate a reservation data object that defines at least one source to be monitored for availability of at least one content item of the plurality of future content items that comprises metadata identifying the actor;

monitor content availability data of one or more sources at least in part by referencing the reservation data object to determine that a newly available content item from the one or more sources is scheduled to become available from the one or more sources at a particular time; and

based at least in part on the monitoring, cause, at the particular time, the newly available content to be accessible for playing via a user interface that indicates that the newly available content is available for playing from storage.

16 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the one or more sources is selected from a list of approved sources specified by a user associated with the device.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein execution of the instructions further causes the control circuitry to:

obtain a unique identifier corresponding to the newly available content item; and wherein monitoring the content availability data of the one or more sources comprises monitoring for the unique identifier.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the unique identifier is a combination of the unique identifier corresponding to the newly available content item with an identifier representing from which of the one or more sources the newly available content item is retrieved.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein monitoring the content availability data of the one or more sources comprises receiving periodic new content availability data from the one or more sources and monitoring the periodic new content availability data for the unique identifier.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein execution of the instructions further causes the control circuitry to:

determine that the newly available content item will be available at least at a second particular time via the one or more sources; and

generate, via the user interface, a prompt for user input selecting which of the one or more sources or which of the particular time or second particular time the newly available content item is to be made accessible for playing.
