Abstract

A cervical cup includes a body having a flange and a valve in fluid communication with an internal portion of the body. The cervical cup is configured to secure a cervix disposed inside the body by applying vacuum pressure to it for the treatment of preterm birth. An example of the disclosed methodology to treat preterm birth includes inserting a cervix into a cervical cup and applying a vacuum to a valve of the cervical cup so as to secure the cervical cup to the cervix.

Claims (40)

1 . A cervical cup, comprising:

a body generally extending along an axial axis thereof;

a flange attached to a proximal end portion of said body;

a valve disposed at a distal end portion of said body and in fluid communication with an internal portion of the body; and

an applicator connecting the valve to a vacuum source;

wherein, said cervical cup is configured to secure a cervix disposed inside of the body by an application of a vacuum pressure to the cervical cup for the treatment of preterm birth and the valve is configured to maintain the vacuum when the applicator is disconnected from the cervical cup.

2 . The cervical cup, according to claim 1 , further comprising:

A pop-off valve disposed on the body, said pop-off valve being configured to release the vacuum pressure inside the cervical cup when the vacuum pressure exceeds a threshold value.

The cervical cup according to claim 1 , wherein a size and a shape of the body are determined by at least one of the factors selected from the group comprising whether or not a woman is pregnant for a first time, how far along a pregnancy is, a health of the cervix, a history of cervix medical procedures, a cryotherapy, or a woman own anatomical variances.

4 . The cervical cup according to claim 1 , wherein the cervical cup is configured to be placed in a patient for an extended period of time.

5 . The cervical cup according to claim 1 , wherein a color of the body changes according to a magnitude of the vacuum pressure.

6 . The cervical cup according to claim 1 , wherein said body is configured to form a barrier at an external portion of an os of the cervix thereby resealing an amnion and retaining an amniotic fluid in situ.

7 . The cervical cup according to claim 1 , wherein, said body is curved with respect to a radial axis thereof so as to create asymmetry about the axial axis.

8 . The cervical cup according to claim 1 , wherein the flange is tilted with respect to the axial axis of the body.

The cervical cup according to claim 8 , wherein the flange is an integral part of the body and formed by curving the proximal end of the body to form a lip and extending the proximal end of the body pass the lip in a second direction generally opposite to the first direction such that the curved end portion forming the flange radially extends away from the body.

10 . The cervical cup according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a layer of glue disposed on an inner surface of the body to assist securing the cervix to the cervical cup.

11 . The cervical cup according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of vents disposed on the flange.

12 . The cervical cup according to claim 11 , further comprising:

a medicated ring disposed around an external surface of the body adjacent to the flange, said medicated ring being configured to administer a medication to the cervix through the plurality of vents.

13 . A method to treat preterm birth, the method comprising:

inserting end portions of a cervix into a cervical cup, said cervical cup comprising a body generally extending along an axial axis thereof, a flange attached to a proximal end portion of said body, and a valve disposed at a distal end portion of said body and in fluid communication with an internal portion of the body;

applying a vacuum to an applicator connected to said valve so as to secure the cervical cup to the cervix disposed inside of the body;

closing the valve; and

disconnecting the applicator from the valve.

14 . The method according to claim 13 , further comprising:

releasing the vacuum pressure by a pop-off valve disposed on the body when the vacuum pressure exceeds a threshold value.

15 . The method according to claim 13 , further comprising:

determining a magnitude of the vacuum pressure by a change of color of the body of the cervical cup.

16 . The method according to claim 13 , further comprising:

forming a barrier at an external portion of an os of the cervix thereby resealing an amnion and retaining an amniotic fluid in situ.

17 . The method according to claim 13 , further comprising

Disposing a layer of glue on an inner surface of the body to assist securing the cervix to the cervical cup.

18 . The method according to claim 13 , further comprising:

Applying a medication to the cervix through a plurality of vents disposed on the flange by disposing a medicated ring around an external surface of the body adjacent to the flange.

19 . The method according to claim 13 , further comprising:

positioning the cervix by a curvature of the body with respect to a radial axis thereof so as to create asymmetry about the axial axis.

20 . The method according to claim 13 , further comprising:

positioning the cervix by a tilt of the flange with respect to the axial axis of the body.
