Abstract

Lift trucks are designed with a common chassis and can accommodate different form factors and different energy sources. According to one example, a chassis for a configurable sit-down counterbalanced forklift truck comprises a front side, a rear side, a left side, and a right side. A chassis compartment is situated between the front side and the rear side and between the left side and right side of the chassis. The chassis compartment is configured to fit within the chassis compartment one of a plurality of different types of power plants for the forklift truck and one of a plurality of different types of power sources. The chassis compartment is configured to hold one of a plurality of different designs of counterweights on or in a rear portion of the chassis compartment. The chassis is configured to support one of a plurality of different operator compartment modules attached atop the chassis.

4. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein the different designs of counterweights comprise a single-piece counterweight and a multi-piece counterweight.

5. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein the different designs of counterweights comprise a first multi-piece counterweight and a second multi-piece counterweight, wherein the first and second multi-piece counterweights have at least one different piece.

6. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein the different operator compartment modules comprise an operator module having a floor at a height less than at least one of the wheels.

7. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein the different operator compartment modules comprise an operator module having a substantially flat operator floor that extends laterally from the left side of the chassis to the right side of the chassis.

8. A chassis according to claim 7 , wherein the operator compartment module further comprises an operator seat comprising a backrest, wherein the operator floor extends below the backrest of the operator seat.

9. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein the chassis compartment is further configured to contain a hydraulic system.

10. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein a height of the chassis is less than a height of at least one of the wheels.

11. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein the chassis is configured to support one of a plurality of different operator compartment modules permanently attached atop the chassis.

12. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein the chassis compartment is formed by the front side, the rear side, the left side, and the right side.

13. A chassis according to claim 1 , wherein the chassis compartment is sized, shaped, and configured so that the power plant is one or more electric motors, the power source is one or more batteries, and the operator compartment module comprises an operator compartment floor at a height less than at least one of the wheels, and wherein the operator compartment floor is also a top cover for the chassis compartment.

14. A chassis according to claim 13 , wherein the operator compartment floor is substantially flat and extends laterally from the left side of the chassis to the right side of the chassis.

15. A chassis according to claim 13 , wherein the operator compartment module further comprises an operator seat comprising a backrest, wherein the operator compartment floor extends below the backrest of the operator seat.

16. A method for manufacturing a configurable sit-down counterbalanced forklift truck using a common chassis, the method comprising:

starting with a common chassis having a front side, a rear side, a left side, and a right side defining a chassis compartment situated between the front side and the rear side and between the left side and right side of the chassis;

installing within the chassis compartment one of a plurality of different types of power plants for the forklift truck and one of a plurality of different types of power sources so as to provide power to the forklift truck to drive and to lift a load;

installing on or in a rear portion of the chassis compartment one of a plurality of different designs of counterweights; and

attaching to the chassis atop the chassis one of a plurality of different operator compartment modules.

17. A method according to claim 16 , wherein the different types of power sources comprise lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, petrochemical fuel, and hydrogen.

18. A method according to claim 16 , wherein the different types of power plants comprise a motor, a hydrogen fuel cell, and an internal combustion engine.

19. A method according to claim 16 , wherein the different designs of counterweights comprise a single-piece counterweight and a multi-piece counterweight.

20. A method according to claim 16 , wherein the different designs of counterweights comprise a first multi-piece counterweight and a second multi-piece counterweight, wherein the first and second multi-piece counterweights have at least one different piece.

21. A method according to claim 16 , further comprising:

attaching a plurality of wheels to the forklift truck such that the power plant can turn one or more of the wheels to drive the forklift truck, and wherein the different operator compartment modules comprise an operator module having a floor at a height less than at least one of the wheels.
