Abstract

An implant system for a knee comprising a femur and a patella. The implant system includes a patella implant comprising an implant body. The implant body comprises a bone facing surface, an articular facing surface, and at least one dimple. The bone facing surface engages bone beneath an implant site formed in the patella. The articular facing surface faces towards an articulating surface of the femur and has a non-anatomical shape (such as a dome). The dimples are formed in the articular facing surface and have a load bearing surface to engage against the articulating surface of the femur. The load bearing surface may have a contour that substantially corresponds to a spherical portion of a generally spherical segment or has an elongated, partially oval shape, and may be configured to increase contact area with the articulating surface of the femur, reduce stress concentrations, and increase resistance to dislocation subluxation.

21 . An implant system for a knee comprising:

(a) a patella implant comprising a patella implant body extending between a patella bone facing surface and an articular facing surface configured to face towards a patient's trochlear groove when the patella implant is implanted at an implant site, wherein the patella bone facing surface comprises a mounting component configured to secure the patella implant to a patella bone, and wherein the articular surface has a truncated spherical curvature;

(b) a trochlear groove implant comprising a trochlear groove implant body extending between a femur facing surface and a load bearing surface, wherein the load bearing surface is configured to articulate with the articular facing surface of the patella implant; and

(c) an anchor comprising

(i) a coupling region configured to removably couple to a second bone facing surface of the trochlear groove implant, and

(ii) a securing region having one or more securing elements extending outwardly from an external surface of the securing region and configured to be disposed into a femur so as to secure the anchor and the trochlear groove implant to the femur.

22 . The implant system of claim 21 , wherein the patella implant comprises a first dimple and a second dimple.

23 . The implant system of claim 22 , wherein at least one of a load bearing surface of the first and second dimple has a circular or an elongated oval shape.

24 . The implant system of claim 22 , wherein an area of a load bearing surface of the first dimple is at least 50% greater than an area of a load bearing surface of second dimple.

25 . The implant system of claim 22 , wherein an area of a load bearing surface of the first dimple is larger than an area of a load bearing surface of the second dimple.

26 . The implant system of claim 22 , wherein the first dimple and the second dimple are aligned along a common plane, wherein the common plane extends through a central region of the patella implant, wherein the common plane extends perpendicular to a direction of movement of the patella implant relative to the articulating surface of the trochlear groove implant.

27 . The implant system of claim 21 , wherein at least a portion of the patella implant comprises a material selected from the group consisting of chromium alloys, titanium alloys, stainless steel alloys, polyethylene based plastics, ceramics, and a combination of two or more thereof.

28 . The implant system of claim 21 , wherein a perimeter of the patella implant body is configured to abut against a portion of the patella bone surrounding the perimeter of the patella implant body.

29 . The implant system of claim 21 , wherein the mounting component is selected from a group consisting of bone cement, one or more pegs, hooks, protrusions, ribs, cut-outs, screws, and anchors.

30 . The implant system of claim 21 , wherein the patella implant body comprises a coating configured to promote bone regrowth and/or regrowth of a patient's native articular cartilage.

31 . An implant system for a knee comprising:

(a) a patella implant comprising

(i) a patella implant body extending between a patella bone facing surface and an articular facing surface configured to face towards a patient's trochlear groove when the patella implant is implanted at an implant site, wherein the patella bone facing surface comprises a mounting component configured to secure the patella implant to a patella bone, wherein the articular surface has a truncated spherical curvature,

(ii) a first and second dimple each being formed in the articular facing surface, the first and second dimple each having a load bearing surface configured to engage against the articulating surface of said femur, so as to increase a contact area between the articulating facing surface and the articulating surface of said femur; wherein the first dimple comprises a medial dimple and the second dimple comprises a lateral dimple configured to articulate against a medial facet and a lateral facet, respectively, of a trochlear groove of said femur;

(b) a trochlear groove implant comprising a trochlear groove implant body extending between a femur facing surface and a load bearing surface, wherein the load bearing surface is configured to articulate with the articular facing surface of the patella implant; and

(c) an anchor comprising configured to be disposed into a femur so as to secure the anchor and the trochlear groove implant to the femur.

32 . The implant system of claim 31 , wherein at least a portion of the patella implant comprises a material selected from the group consisting of chromium alloys, titanium alloys, stainless steel alloys, polyethylene based plastics, ceramics, and a combination of two or more thereof.

33 . The implant system of claim 31 , wherein a perimeter of the patella implant body is configured to abut against a portion of the patella bone surrounding the perimeter of the patella implant body.

34 . The implant system of claim 31 , wherein the mounting component is selected from a group consisting of bone cement, one or more pegs, hooks, protrusions, ribs, cut-outs, screws, and anchors.

35 . The implant system of claim 31 , wherein the patella implant body comprises a coating configured to promote bone regrowth and/or regrowth of a patient's native articular cartilage.

36 . The implant system of claim 31 , wherein at least one of a load bearing surface of the first and second dimple has a circular or an elongated oval shape.

37 . The implant system of claim 31 , wherein an area of a load bearing surface of the first dimple is larger than an area of a load bearing surface of the second dimple.

38 . The implant system of claim 31 , wherein the first dimple and the second dimple are aligned along a common plane, wherein the common plane extends through a central region of the patella implant, wherein the common plane extends perpendicular to a direction of movement of the patella implant relative to the articulating surface of the trochlear groove implant.

39 . The implant system of claim 31 , wherein an area of a load bearing surface of the first dimple is at least 50% greater than an area of a load bearing surface of second dimple.
