Abstract

A modular lens system for use with a camera system and connected therewith. The lens system including modular sections configured to include one or more lenses and/or an aperture. The one or more lenses are controlled by one or more motors to enhance focus, softness, and/or size and other optical characteristics.

Claims (33)

1 . A modular lens system for use with a camera comprising:

a front section including one or more lenses;

a central section configured to connect with the front section and including one or more lenses;

one or more motors configured to move the one or more lenses of one or both of the front section and the central section to effect a change in an optical feature of the modular lens system;

a user input positioned for user interface on the modular lens system; and

a microcontroller in the modular lens system that is configured to receive an input from the user input and provide an output signal to the one or more motors to effect the change in the optical feature of the modular lens system;

wherein the modular lens system is configured to not receive any control signal from a camera that the modular lens system is connected with.

2 . The modular lens system of claim 1 , further comprising an aperture in the central section.

3 . The modular lens system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more motors is positioned within the central section.

4 . The modular lens system of claim 1 , further comprising software that is configured to be used with the microcontroller for providing an output signal to effect the change in the optical feature of the modular lens.

5 . The modular lens system of claim 4 , wherein the central section includes a coupler for removably coupling the central section to the front section.

6 . The modular lens system of claim 5 , wherein the microcontroller is configured to determine a property of the front section when the central section is coupled to the front section.

7 . The modular lens system of claim 6 , wherein the one or more motors are configured to move the one or more lenses of the front section based on the property of the front section determined by the microcontroller.

8 . The modular lens system of claim 4 , wherein the software and the microcontroller are positioned within the central section.

9 . The modular lens system of claim 1 , further comprising a rear section configured to be removably coupled to the central section, and including a scalar for varying a magnification of the image produced by the central section.

10 . The modular lens system of claim 9 wherein the magnification change may be rotationally symmetric or disproportionately varied throughout its axes.

11 . The modular lens system of claim 9 , wherein the central section includes a coupler for removably coupling the rear section to the front section.

12 . The modular lens system of claim 11 , wherein the microcontroller is configured to determine a property of the rear section when the central section is coupled to the rear section.

13 . The modular lens system of claim 11 , wherein the microcontroller is configured to effectuate changes to the central section to accommodate effects of the front and/or rear sections.

14 . The modular lens system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more lenses of the front section are configured to produce an anamorphic image.

15 . The modular lens system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more motors are configured to move the one or more lenses of the front section to vary a squeeze ratio of the anamorphic image or compensate for a change in the object position.

16 . The modular lens system of claim 1 , wherein the central section includes the user input.

17 . The modular lens system of claim 16 , wherein the central section includes a housing having an exterior, and the user input is configured as one or more rotatable rings positioned on the exterior of the housing.

18 . The modular lens system of claim 1 , wherein the modular lens includes an input that is configured to receive an input signal from a device that is remote from the modular lens.

19 . A modular lens system comprising:

a lens module including one or more lenses, and configured to be removably coupled to a camera including an imaging area, wherein the lens module comprises a front section and a second section that are operatively coupled together; and

one or more motors configured to move the one or more lenses of the lens module to effect a change in an optical effect produced by the lens module based on a user input; and

a processor disposed in the lens module second section and wherein the lens module first section is free of a processor, wherein the processor does not receive an input signal from any processor in a camera and is configured to provide a control signal in response to user input from a user input element of the lens module and independent of a camera, and wherein the processor is configured to provide an output signal to at least one of the one or more motors.

20 . A camera system including a camera and a modular lens system connected with the camera, the modular lens system comprising:

a front section including a lens;

a central section coupled to the front section and including a lens; and

a motor configured to move the lens of one or both of the front section and the central section to effect a change in an optical effect produced by the modular lens system based on a user input to the modular lens;

wherein the modular lens is configured to produce an output signal based on the user input, and wherein the modular lens is configured to operate independent of the camera and not receive any control signal from the camera.
