Abstract

A method for controlling discontinuous reception in a wireless transmit/receive unit includes defining a plurality of DRX levels, wherein each DRX level includes a respective DRX cycle length and transitioning between DRX levels based on a set of criteria. The transitioning may be triggered by implicit rules.

Claims (42)

1 . A method implemented by a base station, the method comprising:

sending discontinuous reception (DRX) configuration parameters to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the DRX configuration parameters comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle length, an indication of a second DRX cycle length, an indication of a first timer length, and an indication of a second timer length;

determining that the WTRU started a first timer at the first timer length;

determining that the first timer has expired;

determining that the WTRU is performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length based on the first timer having expired;

determining that the WTRU started a second timer at the second timer length when the WTRU began DRX operation at the first DRX cycle length;

determining that the second timer has expired;

determining that the WTRU is performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length based on the second timer has expired, wherein the second DRX cycle length is a multiple of the first DRX cycle length; and

sending one or more transmissions to the WTRU during a time that the WTRU is determined to be performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the DRX configuration parameters are sent in a radio resource control (RRC) message.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second timer length corresponds to a resume period.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the WTRU reset the first timer based on transmission activity.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

determining that the WTRU reset the second timer based on transmission activity.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of the first DRX cycle length is sent in a first information element (IE), the indication of the second DRX cycle length is sent in a second IE, the indication of the first timer length is sent in a third IE, and the indication of the second timer length is sent in a fourth IE.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of a second timer length is signaled as a number of DRX cycles.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more transmissions sent to the WTRU while the WTRU is performing downlink monitoring in accordance with the second DRX cycle length comprise one or more commands sent during a WTRU awake period associated with the second DRX cycle length.

9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

sending one or more second transmissions to the WTRU while the WTRU is performing downlink monitoring in accordance with the first DRX cycle length, wherein the one or more second transmissions sent to the WTRU while the WTRU is performing downlink monitoring in accordance with the first DRX cycle length comprise one or more second commands sent during a WTRU awake period associated with the second DRX cycle length.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the one or more commands are sent on a control channel.

11 . A base station comprising a processor configured to:

send discontinuous reception (DRX) configuration parameters to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the DRX configuration parameters comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle length, an indication of a second DRX cycle length, an indication of a first timer length, and an indication of a second timer length;

determine that the WTRU started a first timer at the first timer length;

determine that the first timer has expired;

determine that the WTRU is performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length based on the first timer having expired;

determine that the WTRU started a second timer at the second timer length when the WTRU began DRX operation at the first DRX cycle length;

determine that the second timer has expired;

determine that the WTRU is performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length based on the second timer has expired, wherein the second DRX cycle length is a multiple of the first DRX cycle length; and

send one or more transmissions to the WTRU during a time that the WTRU is determined to be performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length.

12 . The base station of claim 11 , wherein the DRX configuration parameters are sent in a radio resource control (RRC) message.

13 . The base station of claim 11 , wherein the second timer length corresponds to a resume period.

14 . The base station of claim 11 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the WTRU reset the first timer based on transmission activity.

15 . The base station of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the WTRU reset the second timer based on transmission activity.

The base station of claim 11 , wherein the indication of the first DRX cycle length is sent in a first information element (IE), the indication of the second DRX cycle length is sent in a second IE, the indication of the first timer length is sent in a third IE, and the indication of the second timer length is sent in a fourth IE.

17 . The base station of claim 11 , wherein the indication of a second timer length is signaled as a number of DRX cycles.

18 . The base station of claim 11 , wherein the one or more transmissions sent to the WTRU while the WTRU is performing downlink monitoring in accordance with the second DRX cycle length comprise one or more commands sent during a WTRU awake period associated with the second DRX cycle length.

19 . The base station of claim 18 , wherein the processor is configured to:

send one or more second transmissions to the WTRU while the WTRU is performing downlink monitoring in accordance with the first DRX cycle length, wherein the one or more second transmissions sent to the WTRU while the WTRU is performing downlink monitoring in accordance with the first DRX cycle length comprise one or more second commands sent during a WTRU awake period associated with the second DRX cycle length.

20 . The base station of claim 18 , wherein the one or more commands are sent on a control channel.
