Abstract

Controlling an exercise machine includes receiving a stream of measurements of extension of a component of an exercise machine. It further includes detecting a first phase of a repeated motion. It further includes detecting a transition to a second phase of the repeated motion. A time constraint is applied to the detection of the transition to the second phase of the repeated motion. It further includes controlling a resistance associated with the second phase of the repeated motion.

Claims (35)

1 . A system, comprising:

an exercise machine including a motor and a sensor, wherein the motor is configured to provide resistance to a cable, wherein the sensor is configured to measure a position of the cable and provide a true cable length signal; and

a processor configured to:

receive a stream of measurements of extension of a component of the exercise machine to determine a repeated motion, comprising to:

determine an extrema based on the position of the cable, wherein the extrema relate to a min or a max, wherein the determining of the extrema comprises to:

determine an exponential weighted average of a length of the cable based on values of the true cable length signal; and

determine, at a given time, when the exponential weighted average of the length of the cable becomes within a threshold distance of the true cable length signal;

detect a candidate repetition for an exercise based on a first pattern of extrema of a first exercise or a second pattern of extrema of a second exercise, wherein the first exercise is different from the second exercise, wherein the first pattern of extrema and the second pattern of extrema both include a plurality of extrema; and

determine the repeated motion based on the candidate repetition;

detect a first phase of the repeated motion, wherein the first phase comprises a concentric phase or an eccentric phase;

detect a transition to a second phase of the repeated motion, wherein a time constraint is applied to the detection of the transition to the second phase of the repeated motion; and

control the resistance associated with the second phase of the repeated motion by sending a signal to the motor; and

a memory coupled to the processor and configured to provide the processor with instructions.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the repeated motion is associated with the exercise that begins at a top position.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first phase comprises the concentric phase, wherein the second phase comprises a rest phase, and wherein the transition is detected at least in part by detecting a valid maximum.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first phase comprises the eccentric phase, the second phase comprises an isometric hold phase, and wherein the transition is detected at least in part by detecting a valid minimum.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the repeated motion is associated with the exercise that begins at a bottom position.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the first phase comprises the concentric phase, wherein the second phase comprises an isometric hold phase, and wherein the transition is detected at least in part by detecting a valid maximum.

7 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the first phase comprises the eccentric phase, the second phase comprises a rest phase, and wherein the transition is detected at least in part by detecting a valid minimum.

8 . A method, comprising:

receiving a stream of measurements of extension of a component of an exercise machine to determine a repeated motion, wherein the exercise machine including a motor and a sensor, wherein the motor is configured to provide resistance to a cable, wherein the sensor is configured to measure a position of the cable and provide a true cable length signal, and wherein the receiving of the stream of measurements comprises:

determining an extrema based on the position of the cable, wherein the extrema relate to a min or a max, wherein the determining of the extrema comprises:

determining an exponential weighted average of a length of the cable based on values of the true cable length signal; and

determining, at a given time, when the exponential weighted average of the length of the cable becomes within a threshold distance of the true cable length signal;

detecting a candidate repetition for an exercise based on a first pattern of extrema of a first exercise or a second pattern of extrema of a second exercise, wherein the first exercise is different from the second exercise, wherein the first pattern of extrema and the second pattern of extrema both include a plurality of extrema; and

determining the repeated motion based on the candidate repetition;

detecting a first phase of the repeated motion, wherein the first phase comprises a concentric phase or an eccentric phase;

detecting a transition to a second phase of the repeated motion, wherein a time constraint is applied to the detection of the transition to the second phase of the repeated motion; and

controlling the resistance associated with the second phase of the repeated motion by sending a signal to the motor.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the repeated motion is associated with the exercise that begins at a top position.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first phase comprises the concentric phase, wherein the second phase comprises a rest phase, and wherein the transition is detected at least in part by detecting a valid maximum.

11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first phase comprises the eccentric phase, the second phase comprises an isometric hold state, and wherein the transition is detected at least in part by detecting a valid minimum.

12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the repeated motion is associated with the exercise that begins at a bottom position.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first phase comprises the concentric phase, wherein the second phase comprises an isometric hold phase, and wherein the transition is detected at least in part by detecting a valid maximum.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first phase comprises the eccentric phase, the second phase comprises a rest phase, and wherein the transition is detected at least in part by detecting a valid minimum.
