Abstract

Methods and systems are disclosed herein for a media guidance application that enhances the viewer experience by providing supplemental content related to a media asset during a fast-access playback operation. For example, in response to a user input during a fast-forward or rewind operation, the media guidance application may generate for display supplemental content related to the progression point of the media asset at which the user input was received while the fast-forward or rewind operation continues.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

generating for display at least one frame of a media asset while the media asset is displayed in a manner other than playing the media asset at a normal play speed; and

while the media asset is displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed:

generating for display a first frame of the media asset;

generating for display a first cast or character information associated with the first frame; and

after a change from displaying the first frame of the media asset to displaying a second frame of the media asset, generating for display a second cast or character information associated with the second frame while the media asset continues to be displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the change from displaying the first frame to displaying the second frame is based on a user interface input requesting a change in play position of the media asset while the media asset is displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the change from displaying the first frame to displaying the second frame is based on receiving a skip command while the media asset is being displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the skip command skips a number of frames of the media asset.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the skip command is one of: a forward skip command or a backward skip command.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the change from displaying the first frame to displaying the second frame is based on receiving, while the media asset is displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed, a command instructing a fast-access playback operation, wherein:

the fast-access playback operation is one of: a fast-forward operation, a rewind operation, a skip operation, a chapter selection operation, a segment selection operation, a skip segment operation, a jump segment operation, a next segment request operation, a previous segment request operation, or a skip advertisement operation.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first cast or character information is based on one or more characters associated with the first frame and wherein the second cast or character information is based on one or more characters associated with the second frame.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the one or more characters associated with the first frame are depicted in the first frame.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating for display the at least one frame of the media asset while the media asset is displayed in a manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed, comprises generating for display the at least one frame of the media asset at a speed lower than the normal play speed.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating for display the at least one frame of the media asset while the media asset is displayed in a manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed, comprises generating for display the at least one frame of the media asset at a speed higher than the normal play speed.

11. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

generate for display at least one frame of a media asset while the media asset is displayed in a manner other than playing the media asset at a normal play speed; and

while the media asset is displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed:

generate for display a first frame of the media asset;

generate for display a first cast or character information associated with the first frame; and

after a change from displaying the first frame of the media asset to displaying a second frame of the media asset, generate for display a second cast or character information associated with the second frame while the media asset continues to be displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the change from displaying the first frame to displaying the second frame is based on a user interface input requesting a change in play position of the media asset while the media asset is displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the change from displaying the first frame to displaying the second frame is based on receiving a skip command while the media asset is being displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the skip command skips a number of frames of the media asset.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the skip command is one of: a forward skip command or a backward skip command.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the change from displaying the first frame to displaying the second frame is based on receiving, while the media asset is displayed in the manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed, a command instructing a fast-access playback operation, wherein:

the fast-access playback operation is one of: a fast-forward operation, a rewind operation, a skip operation, a chapter selection operation, a segment selection operation, a skip segment operation, a jump segment operation, a next segment request operation, a previous segment request operation, or a skip advertisement operation.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first cast or character information is based on one or more characters associated with the first frame and wherein the second cast or character information is based on one or more characters associated with the second frame.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more characters associated with the first frame are depicted in the first frame.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to generate for display the at least one frame of the media asset while the media asset is displayed in a manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed by generating for display the at least one frame of the media asset at a speed lower than the normal play speed.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to generate for display the at least one frame of the media asset while the media asset is displayed in a manner other than the playing the media asset at the normal play speed by generating for display the at least one frame of the media asset at a speed higher than the normal play speed.
