Abstract

Present embodiments provide various open coil spring assemblies which perform like an encased spring assembly. The embodiments have elastic lacings or connections which connect springs to springs or springs to lacings. Various spring embodiments are provided as well as various arrangements for the elastic lacings. All of these features improve compliance and stability while reducing motion transfer.

Claims (8)

1. An open coil spring assembly, comprising:

a plurality of rows of open coil springs arranged in a matrix, each of the open coil springs including an upper end convolution, a lower end convolution, and a plurality of helical convolutions that extend between the upper end convolution and the lower end convolution;

wherein a first side of the upper end convolution of a first coil spring of the open coil springs is bent to form a first clip, the first clip extending around and directly connecting the first side of the upper end convolution of the first coil spring to the upper end convolution of an adjacent second open coil spring of the open coil springs, such that the first coil spring pivots around the upper end convolution of the adjacent second coil spring,

and wherein a second side of the upper end convolution of the first coil spring of the open coil springs is bent to form a second clip, the second clip extending around and directly connecting the second side of the upper end convolution of the first coil spring to the upper end convolution of an adjacent third open coil spring of the open coil springs, such that the first coil spring pivots around the upper end convolution of the adjacent third coil spring.

2. The open coil spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first clip and the second clip each include two open-ended bends that partially enclose the upper end convolution of the adjacent second or third open coil spring.

The open coil spring assembly of claim 2 , wherein each of the two open-ended bends of the first clip are spaced apart along the first side of the upper end convolution, and wherein each of the two open-ended bends of the second clip are spaced apart along the second side of the upper end convolution.

4. The open coil spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second side is next to the first side.

5. The open coil spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second side is opposite to the first side.
