Abstract

Multimedia content segment identified by users may be shared among media devices and media device users. Media content segment metadata is generated based on one or more identified media content item segments identified in one or more media content items. The media content segment metadata may include, but is not limited to, information indicating segment start and stop times, information about the particular media content item (e.g., title, actors, original air date), and other user-provided descriptive information. A link for the media content segment metadata may be posted for display on a webpage and which enables other users to access the media content segment metadata.

Claims (47)

1 . A method comprising:

generating, based on user interface input, metadata comprising a uniform resource locator (URL) identifying a start point or an end point of at least one segment of a media content item, wherein the metadata is stored separately from the at least one segment;

receiving notification of user interaction, by a requesting device, with a user interface element associated with the URL, wherein the user interaction indicates a request of the at least one segment;

determining that a user account associated with the requesting device is eligible to access an entirety of the media content item;

based at least in part on the determining that the user account is eligible to access the entirety of the media content item, accessing the URL to cause play of the at least one segment, according to the metadata, without causing play of an entirety of the media content item, wherein the at least one segment is played by the requesting device; and

based at least in part on receiving input from the requesting device requesting to access a portion of the media content item that occurs prior to the start point of the at least one segment or after the end point of the at least one segment, causing play of a segment of the media content item other than the at least one segment.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one segment comprises a plurality of segments, and the metadata identifies a start point or an end point of each segment of the plurality of segments and an order of playing the plurality of segments, and

wherein, further based at least in part on the determining that the user account is eligible to access the entirety of the media content item, causing play of the plurality of segments in the order specified by the metadata.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interface input comprises a group identifier indicating a group of segments with which the at least one segment is to be associated, and a preview image displayed for the at least one segment.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the start point or the end point is automatically modified based at least in part on a boundary detected in the media content item, the boundary based on one or more boundary rules associated with the at least one segment and the user interface input, wherein the boundary corresponds to a commercial segment boundary.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating of the metadata is performed by a server, and wherein the server causes play of the at least one segment of the media content item at the requesting device.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the transmitting of the metadata to the requesting device is performed by the server.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the determining that the user account at the requesting device is eligible is performed by the server.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

prior to the generating of the metadata, generating a display of the media content item to a user device,

wherein the storing of the metadata separately from the at least one segment is performed by storing the metadata to the user device.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that one or more users previously requested to replay the at least one segment when viewing the media content item; and

associating the at least one segment with the metadata based at least in part on the determining that the one or more users previously requested to replay the at least one segment when viewing the media content item.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing display of the URL, wherein the displayed URL comprises an indication of the start point or the end point.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least one segment comprises a plurality of segments, each respective segment of the plurality of segments having a respective start time of a plurality of start times; and

the portion of the media content associated with the input occurs prior to each of the plurality of start times.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least one segment comprises a plurality of segments, each respective segment of the plurality of segments having a respective end time of a plurality of end times; and

the portion of the media content associated with the input occurs after each of the plurality of end times.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least one segment is a single segment having the start point and the end point; and

the portion of the media content associated with the input occurs at a time within the media content item but outside a period of time between the start point and the end point of the single segment.

14 . A system comprising:

a memory;

control circuitry configured:

to generate, based on user interface input, metadata comprising a uniform resource locator (URL) identifying a start point or an end point of at least one segment of a media content item, wherein the metadata is stored in the memory separately from the at least one segment;

to receive notification of user interaction, by a requesting device, with a user interface element associated with the URL, wherein the user interaction indicates a request of the at least one segment;

to determine that a user account associated with the requesting device is eligible to access an entirety of the media content item; and

based at least in part on the determining that the user account is eligible to access the entirety of the media content item, accessing the URL to cause play of the at least one segment, according to the metadata, without causing play of an entirety of the media content item, wherein the at least one segment is played by the requesting device; and

based at least in part on receiving input from the requesting device requesting to access a portion of the media content item that occurs prior to the start point of the at least one segment or after the end point of the at least one segment, cause play of a segment of the media content item other than the at least one segment.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one segment comprises a plurality of segments, and the metadata identifies a start point or an end point of each segment of the plurality of segments and an order of playing the plurality of segments, and

wherein the control circuitry is configured, based at least in part on the determining that the user account is eligible to access the entirety of the media content item, to cause play of the plurality of segments in the order specified by the metadata.

16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the user interface input comprises a group identifier indicating a group of segments with which the at least one segment is to be associated, and a preview image displayed for the at least one segment.

17 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the start point or the end point is automatically modified based at least in part on a boundary detected in the media content item, the boundary based on one or more boundary rules associated with the at least one segment and the user interface input, wherein the boundary corresponds to a commercial segment boundary.

18 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the generating of the metadata is performed by a server, and wherein the server causes play of the at least one segment of the media content item at the requesting device.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the transmitting of the metadata to the requesting device is performed by the server, and the determining that the user account at the requesting device is eligible is performed by the server.

20 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured:

to generate, prior to the generating of the metadata, a display of the media content item to a user device,

wherein the storing of the metadata separately from the at least one segment is performed by storing the metadata to the user device.
