Abstract

A conditioning system for a conditioned interior space includes a vapor compression system, an evaporative cooling system, and a controller. The vapor compression system includes an evaporator, a condenser, a refrigerant active fluid for flowing between the evaporator and the condenser, a first fan to produce a first airflow toward the conditioned interior space, and a second fan for producing a second airflow from the condenser toward an exterior space. The evaporative cooling system includes a first tank containing a non-refrigerant active fluid, and a heat exchange device fluidically coupled to the first tank to receive the non-refrigerant active fluid. The first fan is positioned to produce the first airflow through the heat exchange device toward the conditioned interior space. The controller is programmed to control cooperative operation of the vapor compression system and the evaporative cooling system to condition the conditioned interior space.

Claims (26)

1. A conditioning system for a conditioned interior space, the conditioning system comprising:

a vapor compression system including:

a refrigerant loop for circulating a refrigerant active fluid;

an evaporator positioned on the refrigerant loop in a first airflow directed toward the conditioned interior space; and

a condenser positioned on the refrigerant loop in a second airflow directed toward an exterior space; and

a heat and mass exchange device positioned in the first airflow, wherein the heat and mass exchange device is connected to a source of water and comprises an open fluid path for flow of a non-refrigerant active fluid including water, the open fluid path comprises a plurality of cavities and each cavity defines an open portion exposed to the first airflow and covered by a vapor-permeable membrane, and the vapor-permeable membrane permits water vapor evaporated from the non-refrigerant active fluid to pass out of the open portion and into the first airflow.

2. The conditioning system of claim 1 , wherein the non-refrigerant active fluid comprises a liquid desiccant and water solution, and wherein the source of water is an external water source to replenish the water in the non-refrigerant active fluid.

3. The conditioning system of claim 1 , wherein the non-refrigerant active fluid consists of only water.

4. The conditioning system of claim 1 , wherein the flow of the non-refrigerant active fluid in the open fluid path is counter to the first airflow.

5. The conditioning system of claim 1 , further comprising a controller programmed to control cooperative operation of the vapor compression system and the heat and mass exchange device to condition the conditioned interior space.

6. The conditioning system of claim 5 , wherein the controller is programmed to control operation of the vapor compression system and the heat and mass exchange device to cooperatively condition the conditioned interior space to desired temperature and humidity levels.

7. The conditioning system of claim 1 , wherein the heat and mass exchange device is positioned upstream from the evaporator.

8. A conditioning system for a conditioned interior space, the conditioning system comprising:

a vapor compression system including:

a refrigerant loop for circulating a refrigerant active fluid;

an indoor heat exchanger positioned on the refrigerant loop in a first airflow directed toward the conditioned interior space; and

an outdoor heat exchanger positioned on the refrigerant loop in a second airflow directed toward an exterior space; and

a heat and mass exchange device positioned in the first airflow, wherein the heat and mass exchange device comprises an open fluid path for flow of a non-refrigerant active fluid, the open fluid path comprises a plurality of cavities and each cavity defines an open portion exposed to the first airflow and covered by a vapor-permeable membrane, the non-refrigerant active fluid comprises water, the vapor permeable membrane permits water vapor evaporated from the non-refrigerant active fluid to pass out of the open portion an into the first airflow, and the heat and mass exchange device is connected to an external water source to replenish the water in the non-refrigerant active fluid.

9. The conditioning system of claim 8 , wherein the flow of the non-refrigerant active fluid in the open fluid path is counter to the first airflow.

10. The conditioning system of claim 8 , further comprising a controller programmed to control cooperative operation of the vapor compression system and the heat and mass exchange device to condition the conditioned interior space.

11. The conditioning system of claim 10 , wherein the controller is programmed to control operation of the vapor compression system and the heat and mass exchange device to cooperatively condition the conditioned interior space to desired temperature and humidity levels.

12. The conditioning system of claim 8 , wherein the heat and mass exchange device is positioned upstream from the evaporator.

13. The conditioning system of claim 8 , wherein the vapor compression system is configured as a cooling system for cooling the interior space, and wherein the heat and mass exchange device operates to provide evaporative cooling.

14. The conditioning system of claim 8 , wherein the vapor compression system is a heat pump for heating the interior space, and wherein the heat and mass exchange device operates to humidify the interior space.

15. The conditioning system of claim 8 , further comprising a heat source positioned in the first airflow upstream from the heat and mass exchange device and the indoor heat exchanger.

16. The conditioning system of claim 8 , wherein the non-refrigerant active fluid consists of only water.
