Abstract

Medical device management platforms, as for example, automated external defibrillator (AED) management platforms are described. The disclosure also describes systems, management platform graphical user interfaces, management server infrastructures, connected automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and protocols for communications between such system/devices that make it easier for owners, administrator, and others to manage their devices. The present disclosure also describes mechanisms that facilitate getting incident information to interested parties, including medical personnel, EMS personnel and others when an AED is used.

Claims (82)

1 . A method of setting a security code on an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the method comprising:

causing a user interface to be render on an administrator device that enables an administrator to directly or indirectly identify a target AED and a security code to be applied to the target AED;

at a management server, receiving a first message from the administrator device that directly or indirectly identifies the target AED and the security code; and

transmit a set security code command from the management server to the target AED, the set security code command including the security code to be applied to the target AED, wherein in response to reception of the set security code command, the target AED requires the security code to be provided by a user before the user can make changes to selected AED settings by interacting directly with the target AED.

2 . A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the target AED is configured to periodically check-in with the AED management server and the AED management server transmits the set security code command to the target AED at least in part in response to one of the periodic check-ins.

A method as recited in claim 1 wherein in response to reception of the first message, the AED management server pings the target AED requesting that the target AED check-in with the AED management server and the AED management server transmits the set security code command to the target AED at least in part in response to the AED checking-in in response to the ping.

4 . A method as recited in claim 1 wherein:

the target AED includes a base defibrillator unit and an interface unit attached to the base defibrillator unit, the interface unit comprising a touch sensitive display screen and a communication unit configured to communicate with the management server; and

the set security code command is received by the interface unit and is not communicated to the base defibrillator unit; and

the user must enter the security code on the touch sensitive display screen before any changes are made to the selected AED settings.

5 . A method as recited in claim 4 wherein no changes may be made to settings of either the base defibrillator unit or the interface unit by interacting directly with the AED without entry of the security code on the touch sensitive display.

6 . A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the security code is selected from the group consisting of a PIN code and a password.

7 . A method as recited in claim 1 wherein:

the user interface facilitates the administrator identifying a set of target AEDs by associating the security code with one or more group labels, each group label being associated with a set of one or more AEDs;

when the administrator associates the security code with a first selected group label, the first message identifies the target AED(s) at least in part by including a first group label identifier that identifies the first selected group label; and

the AED management server transmits set security code commands to each of the target AEDs associated with the first selected group label that do not already require the security code.

8 . A method as recited in claim 1 wherein:

the user interface facilitates the administrator associating the security code with one or more group labels, each group label being associated with a set of one or more AEDs;

when the administrator associates the target AED with a first selected group label that was previously associated with the security code, the first message indirectly identifies the security code at least in part by including a group label identifier that identifies the first selected group label; and

the AED management server automatically transmits set security code command to the target AED at least partially in response to reception of the first message.

9 . A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the administrator is associated with an owner of the AED and is not associated with a manufacturer or distributor of the AED.

10 . A method of setting a password for a communications network on an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the method comprising:

causing a user interface to be rendered on an administrator device that enables an administrator to directly or indirectly identify (i) a target AED, (ii) a communications network that the target AED may be able to access, and (iii) a password associated with the communications network;

at a management server, receiving a first message from the administrator device that directly or indirectly identifies the target AED, the communications network and the password; and

transmit a set communications network password command from the management server to the target AED, the set communications network password command including an indication of the communications network and the password, wherein in response to reception of the set communications network password command, the target AED automatically utilizes the password to access the communications network.

11 . A method as recited in claim 10 wherein:

the target AED includes a base defibrillator unit and an interface unit attached to the base defibrillator unit, the interface unit comprising a touch sensitive display screen and a communication unit configured to communicate with the management server; and

the set communications network password command is received by the interface unit and is not communicated to the base defibrillator unit; and

the interface unit utilizes the password to access the communications network.

12 . A method as recited in claim 10 wherein:

the user interface facilitates the administrator identifying a set of target AEDs by associating the password with one or more group labels, each group label being associated with a set of one or more AEDs;

when the administrator associates the password with a first selected group label, the first message identifies the target AED(s) at least in part by including a first group label identifier that identifies the first selected group label; and

the AED management server transmits set communications network password commands to each of the target AEDs associated with the first selected group label that do not already have the password.

13 . A method as recited in claim 10 wherein:

the user interface facilitates the administrator associating the password with one or more group labels, each group label being associated with a set of one or more AEDs;

when the administrator associates the target AED with a first selected group label that was previously associated with the password, the first message indirectly identifies the password and the communications network at least in part by including a group label identifier that identifies the first selected group label; and

the AED management server automatically transmits set communications network password command to the target AED at least partially in response to reception of the first message.

14 . A method of setting a power mode on an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the method comprising:

causing a user interface to be render on an administrator device that enables an administrator to directly or indirectly identify a target AED and a power mode desired to be applied to the target AED;

at a management server, receiving a first message from the administrator device that directly or indirectly identifies the target AED and the desired power mode; and

transmit a set power mode command from the management server to the target AED, the set power mode command including an indication of the desired power mode, wherein in response to reception of the set power mode command, the target AED sets a power mode of the target AED to the desired power mode.

15 . A method as recited in claim 14 wherein:

the target AED includes a base defibrillator unit and an interface unit attached to the base defibrillator unit, the interface unit comprising a touch sensitive display screen and a communication unit configured to communicate with the management server; and

the set power mode command is received by the interface unit and one of (i) changes an interface power mode of the interface unit without changing a base unit power mode of the base defibrillator unit, (ii) changes the base unit power mode without changing the interface power mode, and (iii) changes both the base unit power mode and the interface power mode.

16 . A method as recited in claim 14 wherein:

the user interface facilitates the administrator identifying a set of target AEDs by associating the desired power mode with one or more group labels, each group label being associated with a set of one or more AEDs;

when the administrator associates the desired power mode with a first selected group label, the first message identifies the target AED(s) at least in part by including a first group label identifier that identifies the first selected group label; and

the AED management server transmits set power mode commands to each of the target AEDs associated with the first selected group label that are not already in the desired power mode.

17 . A method as recited in claim 14 wherein:

the user interface facilitates the administrator associating the desired power mode with one or more group labels, each group label being associated with a set of one or more AEDs;

when the administrator associates the target AED with a first selected group label that was previously associated with the desired power mode, the first message indirectly identifies the desired power mode at least in part by including a group label identifier that identifies the first selected group label; and

the AED management server automatically transmits the set power mode command to the target AED at least partially in response to reception of the first message.

18 . A method of setting a broadcast mode on an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the method comprising:

causing a user interface to be render on an administrator device that enables an administrator to directly or indirectly identify a target AED and a broadcast mode desired to be applied to the target AED;

at a management server, receiving a first message from the administrator device that directly or indirectly identifies the target AED and the desired broadcast mode; and

transmit a set broadcast mode command from the management server to the target AED, the set broadcast mode command including an indication of the desired broadcast mode, wherein in response to reception of the set broadcast mode command, the target AED sets a broadcast mode of the target AED to the desired broadcast mode.

19 . A method as recited in claim 18 wherein:

the desired broadcast mode is one of enable beacons and disable beacons;

when the broadcast mode is set to enable beacons, the target AED periodically broadcasts beacons; and

when the broadcast mode is set to disable beacons, the target AED does not broadcast beacons.

20 . A method as recited in claim 19 wherein the beacons broadcast by the AED are or include location beacons.

21 . A method as recited in claim 18 wherein:

the desired broadcast mode is one of enable advertisements and disable advertisements;

when the broadcast mode is set to enable advertisements, the target AED periodically broadcasts advertisements; and

when the broadcast mode is set to disable advertisements, the target AED does not broadcast advertisements.

22 . A method as recited in claim 21 wherein the advertisements are Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertisements.

23 . A method as recited in claim 18 wherein:

the user interface facilitates the administrator identifying a set of target AEDs by associating the desired broadcast mode with one or more group labels, each group label being associated with a set of one or more AEDs;

when the administrator associates the desired broadcast mode with a first selected group label, the first message identifies the target AED(s) at least in part by including a first group label identifier that identifies the first selected group label; and

the AED management server transmits set broadcast mode commands to each of the target AEDs associated with the first selected group label that are not already in the desired power mode.

24 . A method as recited in claim 18 wherein:

the user interface facilitates the administrator associating the desired broadcast mode with one or more group labels, each group label being associated with a set of one or more AEDs;

when the administrator associates the target AED with a first selected group label that was previously associated with the desired broadcast mode, the first message indirectly identifies the broadcast mode at least in part by including a group label identifier that identifies the first selected group label; and

the AED management server automatically transmits the set broadcast mode command to the target AED at least partially in response to reception of the first message.

25 . A method of setting an operational mode, parameter or setting on an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the method comprising:

causing a user interface to be render on an administrator device that enables an administrator to directly or indirectly identify a target AED and a desired operational mode, parameter, or setting desired to be applied to the target AED;

at a management server, receiving a first message from the administrator device that directly or indirectly identifies the target AED and the desired operational mode, parameter or setting; and

transmit a set operational mode, parameter or setting command from the management server to the target AED, the set operational mode or setting command including an indication of the desired operational mode or setting, wherein in response to reception of the set operational mode, parameter or setting command, the target AED sets an operational mode or setting of the target AED to the desired operational mode.

A method as recited in claim 25 wherein the operational mode is a broadcast mode and the set operational mode command is a set broadcast mode command, wherein in response to reception of the set broadcast mode command, the target AED sets a broadcast mode of the target AED to a desired broadcast mode.

27 . A method as recited in claim 25 wherein the operational mode is a power mode and the set operational mode command is a set power mode command, wherein in response to reception of the set power mode command, the target AED sets a power mode of the target AED to a desired power mode.

A method as recited in claim 25 wherein the operational mode dictates a training sequence to be used when the target AED is in a training mode, and the set operational mode command is a set training sequence command, wherein in response to reception of the set training sequence command, the target AED sets a training sequence of the target AED to the desired training sequence for use when the target AED is placed in a training mode.

An automated external defibrillator (AED) management user interface embodied in a computer readable media on an administrator device, the AED management user interface being configured to enable editing of AED device settings associated a first AED, the first AED being located remotely relative to the administrator device, wherein when in response to selection or identification of a desired device setting that is different than a current device setting on the first AED, the AED management user interface sends a first message to an AED management server that prompts the AED management server to send an Update Device Settings command to the first AED that prompts the first AED to update its device settings to include the desired device setting and send a confirmation message to the AED management server that indicates that the desired device setting has been applied.
