Abstract

Methods and systems are described for a media guidance application that limits the incentive for authorized users to share content with unauthorized users, while still allowing users to access content virtually anywhere. Specifically, the media guidance application allows an authorized user to receive only a portion of a media asset that he or she is authorized to access on a different device, after a designated time period, and/or when the remaining portion of the media asset is inaccessible.

Claims (32)

1 . A method comprising:

determining that a media asset is being consumed via a first device;

determining a time remaining in a trip;

determining, based on the time remaining in the trip, an unconsumed portion of the media asset, wherein the unconsumed portion of the media asset is a portion of the media asset that likely will not be completed by an end of the trip;

generating a selectable option to download the unconsumed portion of the media asset to a second device distinct from the first device;

enabling, according to receipt of a selection of the selectable option, a download of the unconsumed portion of the media asset to the second device; and

making unavailable for consumption the unconsumed portion of the media asset on the first device after the unconsumed portion of the media asset is downloaded to the second device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the unconsumed portion is identified as the portion of the media asset between a last viewed timestamp of the media asset and a final timestamp of the media asset.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying the second device communicatively coupled to receive the download of the unconsumed portion of the media asset.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the selectable option to download the unconsumed portion of the media asset to the second device is displayed by the first device while the media asset is being consumed via the first device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the time remaining in the trip is determined according to an estimated flight arrival time of a vehicle, wherein the first device is communicatively coupled to the vehicle.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the time remaining in the trip is determined according to a speed of a vehicle, wherein the first device is communicatively coupled to the vehicle.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the download of the unconsumed portion of the media asset is enabled from the first device to the second device.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the media asset is consumed via the first device using a first media application, and the unconsumed portion of the media asset is available for consumption on the second device via the first media application.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the unconsumed portion of the media asset is unavailable on the first device after the end of the trip.

10 . A system comprising:

control circuitry configured:

to determine that a media asset is being consumed via a first device;

to determine a time remaining in a trip and to store the time remaining to a memory;

to determine, based on the time remaining in the trip, an unconsumed portion of the media asset, wherein the unconsumed portion of the media asset is a portion of the media asset that likely will not be completed by an end of the trip; and

to generate a selectable option to download the unconsumed portion of the media asset to a second device distinct from the first device; and

a communication port configured to enable, according to receipt of a selection of the selectable option, a download of the unconsumed portion of the media asset to the second device, wherein the system makes unavailable for consumption the unconsumed portion of the media asset on the first device after the unconsumed portion of the media asset is downloaded to the second device.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the unconsumed portion is identified as the portion of the media asset between a last viewed timestamp of the media asset and a final timestamp of the media asset.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the system is configured:

to identify the second device communicatively coupled to receive the download of the unconsumed portion of the media asset.

13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the selectable option to download the unconsumed portion of the media asset to the second device is displayed by the first device while the media asset is being consumed via the first device.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the time remaining in the trip is determined according to an estimated flight arrival time of a vehicle, wherein the first device is communicatively coupled to the vehicle.

15 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the time remaining in the trip is determined according to a speed of a vehicle, wherein the first device is communicatively coupled to the vehicle.

16 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the download of the unconsumed portion of the media asset is enabled from the first device to the second device.

17 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the media asset is consumed via the first device using a first media application, and the unconsumed portion of the media asset is available for consumption on the second device via the first media application.

18 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the unconsumed portion of the media asset is unavailable on the first device after the end of the trip.
