Abstract

A hemodialysis system is disclosed. The hemodialysis system includes a dialyzer and an online dialysate generation system comprising a water inlet line and a drain line. The hemodialysis system also includes a disposable set comprising a supply tube fluidly connected to online dialysate generation system and a dialysate pumping tube fluidly connected to the dialyzer. The hemodialysis system further includes a dialysis instrument comprising a dialysate pump head and a motor positioned and arranged to operate the dialysate pump head. The dialysis instrument operates the dialysate pump head to move fresh dialysate from the online dialysate generation system through the dialysate pumping tube to the dialyzer.

Claims (51)

1 . A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

an online dialysate generation system including:

a water inlet line, and

a drain line;

a disposable set including:

a supply tube fluidly connected to the online dialysate generation system, and

a dialysate pumping tube fluidly connected to the dialyzer; and

a dialysis instrument including:

a dialysate pump head,

a motor positioned and arranged to operate the dialysate pump head, and

an interface for receiving the disposable set to enable the disposable set to be loaded into the dialysis instrument such that the dialysate pumping tube comes into registry with the dialysate pump head,

wherein the dialysis instrument operates the dialysate pump head to move fresh dialysate from the online dialysate generation system through the dialysate pumping tube to the dialyzer.

2 . The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , further comprising a door providing access to the interface.

3 . The hemodialysis system of claim 2 , wherein when the door is moved to a closed position, the dialysate pumping tube is operable with the dialysate pump head.

4 . The hemodialysis system of claim 2 , wherein the interface is operable to receive the disposable set when the door is moved to an open position.

5 . The hemodialysis system of claim 2 , wherein the door includes an at least one bellows or an at least one bladder; and

a plate having a gasket for pushing the disposable set against the interface.

6 . The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the dialysis instrument further includes:

an air trap fluidly connected between the dialyzer and the dialysate pumping tube; and

a fluid heater fluidly connected between the air trap and the dialysate pumping tube.

7 . The hemodialysis system of claim 6 , wherein the dialysis instrument further includes:

at least one balance tube fluidly connected between the air trap and the dialyzer; and

a dialysate recirculation circuit fluidly connected to the at least one balance tube.

8 . The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , further comprising a driving motor configured and arranged to automatically make the dialysate pumping tube operable with the dialysate pump head.

9 . The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , further comprising a mechanism driven by the driving motor to automatically make the dialysate pumping tube operable with the dialysate pump head.

10 . The hemodialysis system of claim 9 , wherein the mechanism includes at least one of:

a cam driven by the driving motor; and

a multi-pump race driven by the driving motor.

11 . The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the dialysate pump head is a peristaltic pump head.

12 . The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the dialysate pump head is a fresh dialysate pump head and the dialysate pumping tube is a fresh dialysate pumping tube, and

wherein the disposable set includes a spent dialysate pumping tube and the dialysis instrument includes a spent dialysate pump head and a second motor positioned and arranged to operate the spent dialysate pump head.

The hemodialysis system of claim 12 , wherein the dialysis instrument additionally operates the spent dialysate pump head to move spent dialysate from the dialyzer to at least one of the drain line of the online dialysate generation system, a separate drain, or a dialysate recirculation circuit.

14 . The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the disposable set includes a cassette.

15 . A dialysis system comprising:

an online dialysate generation system including:

a water inlet line, and

a drain line;

a disposable set including:

a supply tube fluidly connected to the online dialysate generation system, and

a dialysate pumping tube; and

a dialysis instrument including:

a dialysate pump head,

a motor positioned and arranged to operate the dialysate pump head, and

an interface for receiving the disposable set to enable the disposable set to be loaded into the dialysis instrument such that the dialysate pumping tube comes into registry with the dialysate pump head,

wherein the dialysis instrument operates the dialysate pump head to move fresh dialysate from the online dialysate generation system through the dialysate pumping tube.

16 . The dialysis system of claim 15 , further comprising a door providing access to the interface,

wherein when the door is moved to a closed position, the dialysate pumping tube is operable with the dialysate pump head.

17 . The dialysis system of claim 16 , wherein the interface is operable to receive the disposable set when the door is moved to an open position.

18 . The dialysis system of claim 16 , wherein the door includes an at least one bellows or an at least one bladder; and

a plate having a gasket for pushing the disposable set against the interface.
