Abstract

A method may include obtaining information from a weather forecasting service that relates to indicators of an incoming hail event. The method may include determining a stowing score that quantifies whether the hail event is likely to occur within a period of time based on the information from the weather forecasting service. Responsive to the stowing score exceeding a threshold value, a time at which the incoming hail event is likely to occur may be predicted based on the weather forecasting service information. The threshold value may indicate a threshold likelihood of the hail event occurring or a threshold period of time before occurrence. The method may include determining a wind direction at the predicted time at which the hail event is likely to occur and stowing photovoltaic modules based on the wind direction.

Claims (42)

1. A method comprising:

receiving weather information from a weather forecasting service, the weather information including a likelihood of a hail event at a location of a solar site and a predicted size of hail stones expected in the hail event;

determining a stowing score for the hail event, wherein the stowing score is based on the likelihood of the hail event at the location of the solar site and the predicted size of hail stones expected in the hail event;

comparing the stowing score with a threshold score value for the solar site; and

placing one or more photovoltaic (PV) modules at the solar site into a stow position based on a determination that the stowing score exceeds the threshold score value.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold score value is set by an operator associated with the solar site.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold score value is set by a computer system associated with the solar site.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stowing score for the hail event is determined by multiplying a value associated with the likelihood of the hail event at the location of the solar site with a value associated with the predicted size of hail stones expected in the hail event.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stow position is determined based on weather information received from the weather forecasting service.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving weather information from a sensor at the location of the solar site.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the stow position is determined based on weather information received from the sensor at the location of the solar site.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the PV modules are placed at non horizontal angles on either a first side or a second side of a torque tube in the stow position.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein whether the stow position is on the first side or the second side of the torque tube is based, at least in part, on information received from weather forecasting service.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the weather information includes a direction of wind; and

whether the stow position includes placing the PV modules on the first side or the second side of the torque tube is based, at least in part, on the direction of wind.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stow position is at or near a maximum tilt angle of the PV modules.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining, based on the weather information, a time at which the hail event is likely to occur at the location of the solar site; and

determining a time at which to place the PV modules at the solar site into the stow position, wherein determining the time at which to place the PV modules at the solar site into the stow position is based, at least in part, on the time at which the hail event is likely to occur at the location of the solar site.

13. A system, comprising:

a motor configured to rotate one or more photovoltaic (PV) modules;

one or more processors configured to provide commands to the motor; and

one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media configured to store instructions that, in response to being executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to perform operations, the operations comprising:

receiving weather information from a weather forecasting service, the weather information including a likelihood of a hail event at a location of a solar site and a predicted size of hail stones expected in the hail event;

determining a stowing score for the hail event, wherein the stowing score is based on the likelihood of the hail event at the location of the solar site and the predicted size of hail stones expected in the hail event;

comparing the stowing score with a threshold score value for the solar site; and

placing one or more PV modules at the solar site into a stow position based on a determination that the stowing score exceeds the threshold score value.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the threshold score value is set by an operator associated with the solar site.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the threshold score value is set by a computer system associated with the solar site.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the stowing score for the hail event is determined by multiplying a value associated with the likelihood of the hail event at the location of the solar site with a value associated with the predicted size of hail stones expected in the hail event.

17. The system of claim 13 , further comprising receiving weather information from a sensor at the location of the solar site.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the stow position is determined based on weather information received from the sensor at the location of the solar site.

19. The system of claim 13 , wherein the PV modules are placed at non horizontal angles on either a first side or a second side of a torque tube in the stow position.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein:

the weather information includes a direction of wind; and

whether the stow position includes placing the PV modules on the first side or the second side of the torque tube is based, at least in part, on the direction of wind.

21. The system of claim 19 , wherein whether the stow position is on the first side or the second side of the torque tube is based, at least in part, on information received from weather forecasting service.

22. The system of claim 13 , wherein the stow position is at or near a maximum tilt angle of the PV modules.

23. The system of claim 13 further comprising:

determining, based on the weather information, a time at which the hail event is likely to occur at the location of the solar site; and

determining a time at which to place the PV modules at the solar site into the stow position, wherein determining the time at which to place the PV modules at the solar site into the stow position is based, at least in part, on the time at which the hail event is likely to occur at the location of the solar site.
