AXIAL LENGTHENING THROMBUS CAPTURE SYSTEM
Systems and methods can remove material of interest, including blood clots, from a body region, including but not limited to the circulatory system for the treatment of pulmonary embolism (PE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), cerebrovascular embolism, and other vascular occlusions.
1 . A medical device comprising:
an elongate body defining a lumen; and
a braided funnel at a distal portion of the elongate body, the braided funnel being configured to expand to define a funnel opening,
wherein the braided funnel is formed of a continuous length of material defining a fold at a distal end of the braided funnel,
wherein the lumen and the braided funnel opening are configured to receive a thrombus, and
wherein a segment of the elongate body proximal to the braided funnel is configured to expand in response to passage of the thrombus through the segment.
2 . The medical device of claim 1 ,
wherein the segment defines a first inner diameter,
wherein the segment is configured to expand to define a second inner diameter to receive the thrombus, the second inner diameter being greater than the first inner diameter, and
wherein the segment is configured to recover back at least to an inner diameter smaller than the second inner diameter after passage of the tubular body and the thrombus through the segment.
3 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate body and the braided funnel comprise an inner braid layer and an outer braid layer.
4 . The medical device of claim 3 , wherein the inner braid layer and the outer braid layer are formed of a continuous length of braided material that defines a fold at the distal end of the braided funnel.
5 . The medical device of claim 3 , wherein the inner braid layer and the outer braid layer extend between a proximal end of the elongate body and the distal end of the braided funnel.
6 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the segment is configured to be variably expanded based on an amount of a compressive force applied along the elongate body.
7 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the braided funnel is configured to be variably expanded based on an amount of a compressive force applied along the elongate body.
8 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the catheter is transformable between a first configuration in which the braided funnel is compressed and a second configuration in which at least the braided funnel is expanded.
9 . The medical device of claim 8 , wherein the braided funnel is configured to self-expand.
10 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein at least the braided funnel is configured to enlarge a blood vessel by pressing against a wall of the blood vessel.
11 . A medical device system comprising:
the medical device of claim 1 , wherein the medical device is a first medical device; and
a second medical device,
wherein the lumen and the funnel opening of the first medical device are configured to receive the second medical device, and
wherein the segment of the elongate body proximal to the braided funnel is configured to expand in response to passage of at least a portion of the second medical device through the segment.
12 . The medical device system of claim 11 , wherein the second medical device includes a thrombus capture device configured to retrieve the thrombus.
13 . A medical device comprising:
an elongate body defining a lumen; and
an expandable funnel at a distal portion of the elongate body, the expandable funnel being configured to expand to define a funnel opening,
wherein the elongate body comprises an inner layer and an outer layer,
wherein the inner layer and the outer layer are formed of a continuous length of material that defines a fold at a distal end of the expandable funnel,
wherein the lumen and the expandable funnel opening are configured to receive a thrombus, and
wherein a segment of the elongate body proximal to the expandable funnel is configured to expand in response to passage of the thrombus through the segment.
14 . The medical device of claim 13 ,
wherein the segment defines a first inner diameter,
wherein the segment is configured to expand to define a second inner diameter to receive the thrombus, the second inner diameter being greater than the first inner diameter, and
wherein the segment is configured to recover back at least to an inner diameter smaller than the second inner diameter after passage of the tubular body and the thrombus through the segment.
15 . The medical device of claim 13 , wherein the catheter is transformable between a first configuration in which the expandable funnel is compressed and a second configuration in which at least the expandable funnel is expanded.
16 . The medical device of claim 13 , wherein the segment is configured to be variably expanded.
17 . A medical device system comprising:
the medical device of claim 13 , wherein the medical device is a first medical device; and
a second medical device,
wherein the lumen and the funnel opening of the first medical device are configured to receive the second medical device, and
wherein the segment of the elongate body proximal to the expandable funnel is configured to expand in response to passage of at least a portion of the second medical device through the segment.
18 . The medical device system of claim 17 , wherein the second medical device includes a thrombus capture device configured to retrieve the thrombus.
19 . A method comprising:
withdrawing a thrombus into a lumen of an elongate body of a catheter through a funnel opening defined by an expandable funnel of the catheter,
wherein the elongate body comprises an inner layer and an outer layer,
wherein the inner layer and the outer layer are formed of a continuous length of material that defines a fold at a distal end of the expandable funnel,
wherein the lumen and the expandable funnel opening are configured to receive a thrombus, and
wherein a segment of the elongate body proximal to the expandable funnel is configured to expand in response to passage of the thrombus through the segment.
20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein withdrawing the thrombus into the lumen of the elongate body comprises engaging the thrombus with a medical device and withdrawing the thrombus into the lumen of the elongate body with the medical device.
