Abstract

Blood flow monitors and methods of monitoring characteristics of tissue are described. An example method of monitoring characteristics of tissue includes: placing a tissue flap at a point of treatment, the tissue flap is a section of tissue that includes a blood vessel; attaching a first sensor to the tissue flap to monitor blood flow through the blood vessel; attaching the first sensor to a blood flow monitor that has a first visual display field and a second visual display field; attaching a second sensor to the tissue flap to monitor a characteristic of the tissue flap; attaching the second sensor to the blood flow monitor; activating the blood flow monitor to observe the blood flow through the first blood vessel and the characteristic of the tissue flap; and monitoring the blood flow through the first blood vessel over a period of time and the characteristic of the tissue flap.

Claims (33)

1. A system for monitoring characteristics of tissue of an individual, the system comprising:

a blood flow monitor comprising a first visual display field and a second visual display field;

a first sensor comprising a sensing component that is configured to engage with a tissue flap of the individual, the first sensor being configured to capture data related to blood flow of the tissue flap; and

a second sensor comprising a sensing component configured to engage with the tissue flap, the second sensor being configured to capture data related to a characteristic of the tissue flap;

wherein the first visual display field is configured to display blood flow of the tissue flap over time, and the second visual display field is configured to show the characteristic of the tissue flap.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensing component of the first sensor is configured to engage a blood vessel of the tissue flap, and to monitor blood flow through the blood vessel.

3. The system of claim 2 , comprising a third sensor configured to engage a second blood vessel of the tissue flap, and to monitor blood flow through the second blood vessel.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the first visual display field is configured to display blood flow over time for the blood vessel and blood flow over time for the second blood vessel.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the blood flow monitor comprises a third visual display field configured to display a frequency domain of blood flow over time for the blood vessel and a frequency domain of blood flow over time for the second blood vessel.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the blood flow monitor comprises a fourth visual display field configured to display blood flow over time and the frequency domain of blood flow over time for each of the blood vessels.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor comprises a cuff that is configured to wrap at least partially around a blood vessel of the tissue flap, the sensing component of the first sensor being coupled to the cuff.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the blood flow monitor comprises a port; and

wherein the first sensor comprises a cable having a first end coupled to the sensing component and a second end configured to couple to the port of the blood flow monitor.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the blood flow monitor comprises a second port; and

wherein the second sensor comprises a cable having a first end coupled to the sensing component and a second end configured to couple to the second port of the blood flow monitor.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor is a Doppler probe and the sensing component of the first sensor is a probe crystal.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor is an StO 2 sensor, and the characteristic of the tissue flap is tissue oxygen saturation.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second visual display field is configured to display the characteristic of the tissue flap over time.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the blood flow monitor comprises a third visual display field configured to display a frequency domain of blood flow over time.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the blood flow monitor comprises a fourth visual display field configured to display a combination of blood flow over time and the frequency domain of blood flow over time.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic of the tissue flap is at least one of tissue oxygen saturation, temperature, blood pressure, orifice diameter, pulse, or coagulation factor.

16. A blood flow monitor comprising:

a first visual display configured to display blood flow over time of a blood vessel of a tissue flap of an individual;

a second visual display configured to display a characteristic of the tissue flap;

a first port configured to couple to a cable of a first sensor that is configured to capture data related to blood flow of the blood vessel of the tissue flap; and

a second port configured to couple to a cable of a second sensor that is configured to capture data related to the characteristic of the tissue flap.

17. The blood flow monitor of claim 16 , comprising a third visual display configured to display a frequency domain of blood flow over time.

18. The blood flow monitor of claim 17 , comprising a fourth visual display configured to show a combination of blood flow over time and the frequency domain of blood flow over time.

19. The blood flow monitor of claim 18 , comprising an analog to digital (A/D) converter configured to receive data from one or more sensors, a digital signal processor (DSP) configured to receive data from the A/D converter, and a digital to analog (D/A) processor configured to receive data from the DSP.

20. The blood flow monitor of claim 19 , comprising:

a speaker; and

an audio amplifier that is configured to receive data from the D/A processor and transmit data to the speaker.

21. The blood flow monitor of claim 20 , comprising a third port configured to couple to a cable of a third sensor that is configured to capture data related to a second blood vessel of the tissue flap.
