Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer program products are provided for tracking one or more items. In one exemplary embodiment, there is provided a method for tracking one or more items. The method may include periodically detecting, by a sensor device, sensor information of the one or more items, and periodically transmitting, by the sensor device, the sensor information. The method may also include determining if the one or more parties is authorized to receive the sensor information. The method may also include transmitting the sensor information to the one or more authorized parties. The method may further include determining if the one or more parties is authorized to receive the sensor information and the periodically transmitting the sensor information to the one or more authorized parties based on a set of one or more permissions that grants or restricts access of the one or more parties to the sensor information based on the set of one or more permissions.

Claims (32)

1 . A computer-implemented method for providing information on one or more shipments, the method comprising:

receiving, at a tracking center, identification of a party associated with a shipment of an object;

using permissions rules to determine whether the party is authorized to create or modify a profile for at least one sensor device associated with the shipment of the object, wherein the profile indicates that the authorized party owns the at least one sensor device for a duration of the shipment and determines at least one of: a condition observed by the at least one sensor device, a first frequency at which the at least one sensor device makes observations, and a second frequency at which the at least one sensor device reports the observations;

configuring the at least one sensor device based on the profile prepared by the authorized party;

providing to the authorized party sensor information regarding the shipment of the object, wherein the sensor information is collected by the at least one configured sensor device; and

transferring an ownership of the at least one sensor device to a different party upon completion of the shipment.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

estimating a maximum duration of monitoring by the at least one sensor device; and

providing the party an indication of the maximum duration for creating or modifying the profile.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the estimation of the maximum duration is based on historical data indicative of a power requirement for parameters associated with the monitoring.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving from the authorized party a limit on a volume of monitoring observations provided to other parties.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving from the authorized party an identification of another party that can access the sensor information.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving from the authorized party an identification of another party that is restricted from accessing the sensor information.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving from the authorized party an identification of a new party that can create profiles for the at least one sensor device.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein configuring the at least one sensor device based on the profile includes using a plug-in connection to a programming device.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein configuring the at least one sensor device based on the profile includes sending one or more messages that include information for identifying the at least one sensor device and thresholds for measuring observations or for reporting observations.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more messages are sent during an initial setup of the at least one sensor device.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more messages are sent in response to changing shipment conditions.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more messages includes future configuration parameters for storage on the at least one sensor device.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the created or modified profile associates a plurality of sensor devices with the shipment of the object.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein configuring the at least one sensor device includes associating the at least one sensor device with a shipment identifier, wherein the shipment identifier includes a tracking number, a freight shipment number, or a customer order number.

15 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising reconfiguring the at least one sensor device based on information derived from the at least one sensor device, information derived from third party systems.

16 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising reconfiguring the at least one sensor device based on information derived from the at least one sensor device, information derived from historical data of previous shipments.

17 . A tracking system for providing information on one or more shipments, the system comprising:

an input device that receives identification of a party associated with a shipment of an object; and

at least one processor configured to:

use permissions rules to determine whether the party is authorized to create or modify a profile for at least one sensor device associated with the shipment of the object, wherein the profile indicates that the authorized party owns the at least one sensor device for a duration of the shipment and determines at least one of: a condition observed by the at least one sensor device, a first frequency at which the at least one sensor device make observations, and a second frequency at which the at least one sensor device reports the observations;

configure the at least one sensor device based on the profile prepared by the authorized party;

provide to the authorized party sensor information regarding the shipment of the object, wherein the sensor information is collected by the at least one configured sensor device; and

transfer an ownership of the at least one sensor device to a different party upon completion of the shipment.

18 . The system of claim 17 , further comprising a database for storing historical data of previous shipments and wherein the at least one processor is further configured to determine whether the authorized party has permission to access the historical data.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to analyze the historical data to suggest thresholds for creating or modifying the profile.
