Abstract

A method can be performed by a browser. The method can include presenting at least a portion of a resource address; presenting a rendered webpage in a browser content window, the rendered webpage being associated with the resource address; presenting an annotation area, the annotation area being outside the browser content window; receiving, in association with a user account, an annotation in the annotation area; and storing the annotation in association with the user account and the resource address.

Claims (62)

1 . A method performed by a browser, the method comprising:

presenting a webpage in a content window of the browser, the webpage being associated with a resource address and including a first portion of text and a second portion of text;

presenting an annotation area, the annotation area being outside the content window;

retrieving a first annotation for the resource address, the first annotation being stored in association with the first portion of text included in the webpage;

retrieving a second annotation for the resource address, the second annotation being stored in association with the second portion of text included in the webpage; and

in response to receiving a selection of the first annotation in the annotation area, performing a first modification of an appearance of the first portion of text and a second modification of an appearance of the second portion of text, the first modification being different than the second modification.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the resource address is a first resource address;

the webpage is a first webpage in a first tab of the browser; and

the method further includes:

detecting a pre-selection action on a second resource address in a second tab of the browser; and

in response to detecting the pre-selection action, presenting a preview area for the second resource address, the preview area including a third annotation for the second resource address.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

analyzing content of the webpage to identify a suggested annotation that includes a portion of the content;

presenting the suggested annotation as a selectable element; and

receiving a selection of the suggested annotation,

wherein the suggested annotation is the first annotation, and the method includes storing the first annotation responsive to the selection of the suggested annotation.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the webpage includes:

rendering the webpage;

determining that the first annotation is associated with the resource address and a user account; and

displaying the first annotation.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the appearance of the first portion of text is performed by a first rendering process that is distinct from a second rendering process that rendered the webpage.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing the first annotation locally without interacting with a server.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first annotation is stored in a directory associated with a user account.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first annotation is stored in association with an identifier of a user.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the appearance of the first portion of text includes highlighting the first portion of text.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the appearance of the first portion of text includes changing a typeface of the first portion of text.

11 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one processor, are configured to cause a computing system to:

present a webpage in a content window of a browser, the webpage being associated with a resource address and including a first portion of text and a second portion of text;

present an annotation area, the annotation area being outside the content window;

retrieve a first annotation for the resource address, the first annotation being stored in association with the first portion of text included in the webpage;

retrieve a second annotation for the resource address, the second annotation being stored in association with the second portion of text included in the webpage; and

in response to receiving a selection of the first annotation for the resource address, perform a first modification of an appearance of the first portion of text and a second modification of an appearance of the second portion of text, the first modification being different than the second modification.

12 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein presenting the webpage includes:

sending, to a server, a request for the webpage associated with the resource address, the request being associated with a user account;

receiving the webpage from the server;

rendering the webpage;

identifying the first annotation as associated with the resource address and the user account; and

displaying the annotation.

13 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the instructions are further configured to cause the computing system to store the first annotation without interacting with the server.

14 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the first annotation is stored locally on the computing system.

15 . A computing system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions stored thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, are configured to cause the computing system to:

present a first webpage in a content window of a browser, the first webpage being associated with a first resource address;

present an annotation area, the annotation area being outside the content window;

retrieve a first annotation for the first resource address, the first annotation being stored in association with a portion of text included in the first webpage;

receive a selection of a control; and

in response to receiving the selection of the control, display a preview area, the preview area including:

a portion of a second webpage associated with a second resource address;

a second annotation for the second resource address;

a portion of a third webpage associated with a third resource address; and

a third annotation for the third resource address.

16 . The computing system of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further configured to cause the computing system to:

analyze content of the first webpage to identify content of the first webpage as a suggested annotation;

present the suggested annotation as a selectable element; and

receive a selection of the suggested annotation,

wherein the suggested annotation is the first annotation, and storing the first annotation occurs responsive to the selection of the suggested annotation.

17 . The computing system of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are configured to cause the computing system to store the first annotation without interacting with a server from which the computing system received the first webpage.

18 . The computing system of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are configured to cause the computing system to store the first annotation in association with an identifier of the first annotation as text locally on a computing device on which the browser is executing.

19 . The computing system of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further configured to cause the computing system to, in response to receiving a selection of the first annotation, modify an appearance of the portion of text included in the first webpage.

20 . The computing system of claim 19 , wherein modifying the appearance of the portion of text is performed by a rendering process that is distinct from a rendering process that rendered the first webpage.
