Abstract

A specimen holding and positioning apparatus operable to substantially non-movably maintain a specimen (e.g., an excised tissue specimen) in a fixed or stable orientation with respect to the apparatus during imaging operations (e.g., x-ray imaging), transport (e.g., from a surgery room to a pathologist's laboratory), and the like for use in facilitating accurate detection and diagnosis of cancers and/or other abnormalities of the specimen.

Claims (31)

2 . A method of imaging a tissue specimen, comprising:

non-movably retaining the tissue specimen at least partially within a specimen apparatus;

inserting the specimen apparatus containing the tissue specimen into an imaging chamber of an imaging system, the imaging system having an x-ray source and an x-ray detector positioned along an imaging axis;

orienting the specimen apparatus within the imaging chamber such that the tissue specimen is disposed along the imaging axis and between the x-ray source and the x-ray detector;

acquiring at least one first x-ray image along a first axis through the tissue specimen;

rotating the specimen apparatus around a rotation axis and relative to the x-ray source; and

acquiring at least one second x-ray image along a second axis through the tissue specimen, the second axis different than the first axis.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the second axis is orthogonal to the first axis.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein inserting the specimen apparatus into the imaging chamber includes rotatably coupling at least one end of the specimen apparatus to the imaging chamber at the rotation axis.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein inserting the specimen apparatus into the imaging chamber includes rotatably coupling opposing ends of the specimen apparatus to the imaging chamber at the rotation axis.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the rotation axis is orthogonal to the imaging axis.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the tissue specimen is non-deformably retained within the specimen apparatus.

8 . The method of claim 2 , wherein non-movably retaining the tissue specimen includes elastically deforming first and second retention members of the specimen apparatus to surround the tissue specimen.

9 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising verifying tissue margins of the tissue specimen via the at least one first x-ray image and the at least one second x-ray image.

10 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising displaying the at least one first x-ray image or the at least one second x-ray image.

11 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising indicating an area of interest of the tissue specimen based on the at least one first x-ray image or the at least one second x-ray image.

12 . A system for imaging an excised tissue specimen, comprising:

a specimen apparatus configured to non-movably retain the tissue specimen; and

an imaging system defining an imaging chamber, the imaging system having an x-ray source and an x-ray detector that are positioned along an imaging axis that extends through the imaging chamber,

wherein the imaging chamber is configured to receive the specimen apparatus such that the tissue specimen is oriented along the imaging axis and between the x-ray source and the x-ray detector, and

wherein the specimen apparatus is rotatable around a rotation axis extending through the imaging chamber such that at least one first x-ray image can be acquired along a first axis through the tissue specimen and at least one second x-ray image can be acquired along a second axis, the second axis different than the first axis via rotation of the specimen apparatus.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the second axis is orthogonal to the first axis.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the rotation axis is orthogonal to the imaging axis.

15 . The system of claim 12 , wherein when the specimen apparatus is received within the imaging chamber, the specimen apparatus spaced from both an x-ray source wall and an x-ray detector wall of the imaging chamber.

16 . The system of claim 12 , wherein one end of the specimen apparatus is configured to rotatably couple to the imaging chamber at the rotation axis.

17 . The system of claim 12 , wherein both opposing ends of the specimen apparatus are configured to rotatably couple to the imaging chamber at the rotation axis.

18 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the specimen apparatus includes elastically deformable first and second retention members configured to surround the tissue specimen.

19 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the specimen apparatus includes a location identification member.

20 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the imaging chamber includes sidewalls orthogonal relative to the rotation axis, the sidewalls having connection components configured to couple to at least a portion of the specimen apparatus.

21 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the specimen apparatus includes complementary connector components enabling the specimen apparatus to rotate around the rotation axis.
