Abstract

A monitoring apparatus for monitoring a multiphase flow in a pipe using magnetic induction tomography, the apparatus comprising a tubular member adapted for fitting around a pipe defining a flow conduit, wherein the tubular member has outer and inner tubular surfaces surrounding a central longitudinal axis of the tubular member, the inner tubular surface defining a central bore extending along the central longitudinal axis for receiving a pipe therealong, wherein the outer tubular surface has a polygonal cross-section and is comprised of an annular array of a plurality of planar faces, each planar face extending parallel to the central longitudinal axis, wherein at least two of the planar faces each includes a respective coil mounting portion on which is mounted a respective electrical coil, wherein the coil mounting portion comprises a recess in the tubular outer surface which receives a respective electrical coil.

Claims (17)

1 . A monitoring apparatus for monitoring a multiphase flow in a pipe using magnetic induction tomography, the apparatus comprising:

a first coil mount assembly comprising a first attachment mechanism and a second attachment mechanism, the first coil mount assembly configured to support a plurality of planar faces, wherein each planar face extends parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the pipe, and wherein each planar face at least one electrical coil, wherein the at least one electrical coil comprises an electrically conductive wire to form a plurality of wire turns, and wherein the axis of the wire turns are perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the pipe; and

a second coil mount assembly comprising a first attachment mechanism and a second attachment mechanism, the second coil mount assembly configured to support a plurality of planar faces, wherein each planar face extends parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the pipe, and wherein each planar face includes at least one electrical coil,

wherein the first coil mount assembly and the second coil mount assembly are configured to have a plurality of indexed mounting positions on the pipe, wherein each indexed mounting position separates the first coil mount assembly from the second coil mount assembly by a specified distance along the central longitudinal axis of the pipe.

2 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of planar faces is arranged around the pipe such that a longitudinal edge of one of the plurality of planar faces is adjacent a longitudinal edge of another one of the plurality of planar faces.

3 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each turn is in a common plane so that the respective electrical coil is planar, wherein each turn is composed of a plurality of linear sections, wherein the respective electrical coil is polygonal in a plan view, and wherein the planar electrical coil is aligned with the respective planar face including the respective coil mounting portion.

4 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first attachment member on the first coil mount assembly includes a flange that is configured to be attached to a flange on the second attachment mechanism.

5 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electrical coil on each planar face on the second mount assembly comprises an electrically conductive wire to form a plurality of wire turns, and wherein the axis of the wire turns are perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the pipe.

6 . A monitoring apparatus for monitoring a multiphase flow in a pipe using magnetic induction tomography, the apparatus comprising:

a first coil mount assembly comprising a first attachment mechanism and a second attachment mechanism, the first coil mount assembly configured to support a plurality of planar faces arranged around the pipe such that a longitudinal edge of one of the plurality of planar faces is adjacent a longitudinal edge of another one of the plurality of planar faces, wherein each planar face extends parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the pipe and includes, at least one electrical coil, wherein the electrical coil comprises an electrically conductive wire which is wound about a central longitudinal axis to form a plurality of wire turns and wherein the axis of the wire turns are perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the pipe; and

a shield member connected to the first coil mount assembly and disposed around the plurality of planar faces, wherein the shield member comprises an electrically conductive material to shield against electromagnetic radiation.

7 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 6 , wherein each plurality of planar faces includes a respective coil mounting portion.

8 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the coil mounting portion comprises an electrically non-conductive material.

9 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the shield member has a pair of overlapping flange portions which are fitted together to close the shield member in a tubular configuration.

10 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising a second mount assembly comprising a first attachment mechanism and a second attachment mechanism, the second coil mount assembly configured to support a plurality of planar faces arranged around the pipe and at least one electrical coil disposed on the plurality of planar faces.

11 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the electrical coil comprises an electrically conductive wire which is wound about a central longitudinal axis to form a plurality of wire turns and wherein the axis of the wire turns are perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the pipe.

12 . The monitoring apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the shield member is connected to the second mount assembly and disposed around the plurality of planar faces.
