Abstract

Apparatuses, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media are described for detecting profile-based wireless mesh node failover in communication networks. An apparatus can receive authentication information sent from a first wireless mesh node of a plurality of wireless mesh nodes in a wireless communication network, generate a profile for configuring wireless mesh nodes according to the authentication information, establish a communication session with the first wireless mesh node and a second wireless mesh node based on the profile, detect a failure at the first wireless mesh node that triggers to probe the profile for a communication policy that specifies one or more available wireless mesh nodes that includes the second wireless mesh node, and switch a communication connection to the second wireless mesh node in accordance with the communication policy.

detecting a failure at the first wireless mesh node, wherein the failure triggers the user device to probe the profile for a communication policy associated with the detected failure, and wherein the communication policy specifies a set of one or more available wireless mesh nodes that includes the second wireless mesh node; and

switching a communication connection from the first wireless mesh node to the second wireless mesh node in accordance with the communication policy that includes one or more switching rules specifying one or more conditions for when to switch from a first communication connection from the first wireless mesh node to a second communication connection at the second wireless mesh node, and wherein the one or more conditions include the first wireless mesh node having a collision rate above a predetermined collision rate threshold.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the communication policy includes one or more rules that identify conditions when one or more communications are to be switched from the first wireless mesh node to the second wireless mesh node.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more conditions include an error rate associated with the one or more communications that meets or exceeds a threshold level.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the switching rules specify that the communication connection should be switched based on one or more of the first wireless mesh node experiencing at least a threshold level of communication congestion, identifying that the second wireless mesh node has a greater signal strength or bandwidth than the first wireless mesh node, and identifying that the one or more wireless mesh nodes has a signal strength capable of continuing the communication connection.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting that the communication connection at the first wireless mesh node has the collision rate above the predetermined collision rate threshold;

identifying one or more wireless mesh nodes with a signal strength capable of continuing the communication connection in accordance with the communication policy; and

switching the communication connection to an identified one of the one or more wireless mesh nodes based on the signal strength of the identified wireless mesh node and the communication policy.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting a failure of a mesh portal associated with the first wireless mesh node;

determining one or more of an error rate associated with the mesh portal being greater than a predetermined threshold, an increased collision rate associated with the mesh portal, or a measure of congestion associated with the mesh portal reaching a threshold level;

triggering a promotion of a third wireless mesh node in the plurality of wireless mesh nodes to assume one or more functions of the mesh portal in accordance with the communication policy based on the determination; and

updating the communication session and the communication policy to utilize the promoted third wireless mesh node as a backup mesh portal for maintaining one or more communication connections of failed mesh portal.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program executable by a processor to perform a method for detecting profile-based wireless mesh node failover in communication networks, the method comprising:

receiving authentication information utilizing a low power wireless communication signal at a user device, the authentication information sent from a first wireless mesh node of a plurality of wireless mesh nodes in a wireless communication network;

generating a profile for configuring wireless mesh nodes according to the authentication information, wherein the profile includes data regarding registration of the user device with one or more of the plurality of wireless mesh nodes;

establishing a communication session with the first wireless mesh node and a second wireless mesh node based on the profile;

detecting a failure at the first wireless mesh node, wherein the failure triggers the user device to probe the profile for a communication policy associated with the detected failure, and wherein the communication policy specifies a set of one or more available wireless mesh nodes that includes the second wireless mesh node; and

switching a communication connection from the first wireless mesh node to the second wireless mesh node in accordance with the communication policy that includes one or more switching rules specifying one or more conditions for when to switch from a first communication connection from the first wireless mesh node to a second communication connection at the second wireless mesh node, and wherein the one or more conditions include the first wireless mesh node having a collision rate above a predetermined collision rate threshold.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the communication policy includes one or more rules that identify conditions when one or more communications are to be switched from the first wireless mesh node to the second wireless mesh node.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the one or more conditions include an error rate associated with the one or more communications that meets or exceeds a threshold level.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the switching rules specify that the communication connection should be switched based on one or more of the first wireless mesh node experiencing at least a threshold level of communication congestion, identifying that the second wireless mesh node has a greater signal strength or bandwidth than the first wireless mesh node, and identifying that the one or more wireless mesh nodes has a signal strength capable of continuing the communication connection.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the program is further executable to:

detect that the communication connection at the first wireless mesh node has the collision rate above the predetermined collision rate threshold;

identify one or more wireless mesh nodes with a signal strength capable of continuing the communication connection in accordance with the communication policy; and

switch the communication connection to an identified one of the one or more wireless mesh nodes based on the signal strength of the identified wireless mesh node and the communication policy.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the program is further executable to:

detect a failure of a mesh portal associated with the first wireless mesh node;

determine one or more of an error rate associated with the mesh portal being greater than a predetermined threshold, an increased collision rate associated with the mesh portal, or a measure of congestion associated with the mesh portal reaching a threshold level;
