Abstract

Techniques are disclosed for disconnected operation in a distributed database system. In an embodiment, the distributed database system implements a disconnected mode of operation allowing isolated regions of database nodes to provisionally commit transactions, with the global requirements of those transactions later satisfied by a transparent healing process after network connectivity is reestablished between the regions. The healing process, in turn, enables the distributed database system to construct a consistent global state of the database that accounts for the transactions provisionally-committed in each isolated region during the disconnected mode. Once the healing process completes, database clients “see” a healed version of the database that simulates or otherwise closely approximates a state of the database had the distributed database system performed the transactions during a normal, fully-connected, mode of operation.

Claims (40)

1 . A computer system to implement a healing node for a distributed database comprising regions operating in a disconnected mode, the computer system comprising:

a processor;

a network interface circuit operably coupled to the processor; and

a memory operably coupled to the processor and storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to, in response to restoration of connections between the regions:

retrieve transaction logs from the regions of the distributed database via the network interface circuit, each of the transaction logs including entries detailing transactions provisionally committed by nodes in the corresponding region of the distributed database while in the disconnected mode;

construct a new global database state of the distributed database based on the transaction logs; and

set the regions of the distributed database to operate in a normal operating mode and switch to the new global database state.

2 . The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the healing node is a transaction engine (TE) node of the distributed database selected to carry out a healing process.

3 . The computer system of claim 1 , wherein each of the transaction logs includes one or more abstract locks and a set of compensating actions for each of the transactions provisionally committed by nodes in the corresponding region of the distributed database while in the disconnected mode.

4 . The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to construct the new global database state by traversing the transaction logs in an alternating manner.

5 . The computer system of claim 4 , wherein the processor is configured to traverse the transaction logs in a round-robin fashion.

6 . The computer system of claim 4 , wherein the processor is configured to traverse the transaction logs in an order and frequency based on at least one of a statistical analysis or heuristics.

7 . The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to construct the new global database state by aborting conflicting transactions and committing transactions that do not conflict.

8 . The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to merge different versions of a database object from different regions of the distributed database.

A method of operating a distributed database in a disconnected mode, the distributed database comprising a plurality of nodes implemented by computer processors communicatively coupled to each other via a computer network and executing instructions stored in respective non-transitory memories, the method comprising:

receiving, by a first node of the plurality of nodes, a transaction from a client;

updating, by the first node, a representation of a database object in the distributed database affected by the transaction;

declaring, by the first node, an abstract lock and a set of compensating actions for the transaction;

broadcasting, by the first node, a commit message for the transaction; and

logging, by the first node, the transaction, the abstract lock, and the set of compensating actions.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein updating the representation of the database object comprises broadcasting a replication message to a second node in a region of the distributed database containing the first node.

The method of claim 9 , wherein declaring the abstract lock and the set of compensating actions comprises applying an abstract lock policy for each table stored in the distributed database, the abstract lock policy identifying one or more database objects and lock types to apply to those database objects.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein declaring the abstract lock and the set of compensating actions comprises creating an abstract lock for each database object affected by the transaction.

The method of claim 9 , wherein declaring the abstract lock and the set of compensating actions comprises determining (i) a context identifying a database object associated with a record affected by the transaction, (ii) a lock type based on an abstract lock policy for a table associated with the record, (iii) a lock value based on an actual value to change in the record, and (iv) a mode based on the abstract lock policy.

14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein logging the transaction, the abstract lock, and the set of compensating actions comprises storing the transaction, the abstract lock, and the set of compensating actions in durable storage.

15 . The method of claim 9 , wherein logging the transaction, the abstract lock, and the set of compensating actions comprises updating a transaction log in durable storage with a sequence of transactions.

16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

retrieving the sequence of transactions from the durable storage in response to a power cycle or reboot.

17 . A method of operating a distributed database, the distributed database comprising nodes implemented by computer processors communicatively coupled to each other via a computer network and executing instructions stored in respective non-transitory memories, the method comprising:

while operating in a disconnected mode:

receiving, by the nodes, transactions from at least one client; and

logging the transactions with respective abstract locks and respective sets of compensating actions; and

in response to transitioning from the disconnected mode to a normal operating mode:

identifying conflicting transactions based on the respective abstract locks; and

performing appropriate compensating actions from the respective sets of compensating actions for the conflicting transactions.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein performing the appropriate compensating actions from the respective sets of compensating actions for the conflicting transactions comprises aborting at least one conflict transaction.

19 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising, in response to transitioning from the disconnected mode to a normal operating mode:

committing at least one transaction that does not conflict.

20 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising, in response to transitioning from to the disconnected mode:

suspending garbage collection.
