Abstract

A peritoneal dialysis system includes a control unit configured to (i) store a sleep state pattern for the patient, (ii) begin a patient drain followed by a patient fill when at least one sensor indicates that the patient is in a deep sleep state, (iii) extend a dwell period if the sleep state pattern indicates that the patient will enter a subsequent deep sleep state within a first time duration after a programmed dwell period, and (iv) shorten the dwell period if the sleep state pattern indicates that the patient will leave the deep sleep state within a second time duration after an end of the programmed dwell period. The system alternatively or additionally assesses or records a stress level of and/or a fluid/caloric intake by the patient and takes actions accordingly.

Claims (27)

1 . A peritoneal dialysis (“PD”) system comprising:

a PD machine including a control unit storing a treatment prescription that provides at least one parameter for performing a PD treatment using the PD machine;

a sensor having an output indicative of a PD patient stress level; and

logic configured to determine the patient stress level based on the output, the patient stress level used for at least one of (i) comparing against a non-stressed patient baseline, (ii) developing a patient stress level trend, (iii) updating the non-stressed patient baseline, or (iv) determining if the treatment prescription needs updating.

2 . The PD system of claim 1 , which includes a cloud/mobile network in operable communication with the control unit, and wherein the logic is implemented at the cloud/mobile network.

3 . The PD system of claim 1 , wherein the logic is implemented at the control unit of the PD machine.

4 . The PD system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor includes a camera, and wherein the logic analyzes the output from the camera for at least one of facial expression, eye movement, head motion, or mouth movement for at least one of (i) to (iv).

5 . The PD system of claim 4 , wherein the camera is provided by the PD machine.

6 . The PD system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor includes a microphone, and wherein the logic analyzes the output from the microphone for at least one of patient voice pitch or patient voice loudness for at least one of (i) to (iv).

7 . The PD system of claim 4 , wherein the microphone is provided by the PD machine.

8 . The PD system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor includes at least one of a blood pressure monitor or a heart rate monitor, and wherein the logic analyzes the output level from the at least one blood pressure monitor or heart rate monitor for at least one of (i) to (iv).

9 . The PD system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one blood pressure monitor or heart rate monitor is wireless and worn by the PD patient.

The PD system of claim 1 , wherein the patient stress level includes a patient stress index relative to the non-stressed patient baseline, the logic forming the patient stress index based on outputs from at least two sensors selected from the group including: a camera, a microphone, a blood pressure monitor and a heart rate monitor.

11 . The PD system of claim 1 , wherein the logic is further configured to analyze at least one of a fluid/caloric intake of the PD patient or a sleep pattern of the PD patient.

12 . A peritoneal dialysis (“PD”) system comprising:

a PD machine including a control unit storing a treatment prescription that provides at least one parameter for performing a PD treatment using the PD machine;

a first sensor having a first output indicative of a PD patient stress level;

a second sensor having a second output indicative of a PD patient stress level; and

logic configured to determine the patient stress level based on the first output and the second output.

The PD system of claim 12 , wherein the patient stress level is used for at least one of (i) comparing against a non-stressed patient baseline, (ii) developing a patient stress level trend, (iii) updating the non-stressed patient baseline, or (iv) determining if the treatment prescription needs updating.

14 . The PD system of claim 12 , wherein the logic is implemented at (i) a cloud/mobile network in operable communication with the control unit or (ii) the control unit of the PD machine.

15 . The PD system of claim 12 , wherein the first and second sensors are at least two of a camera, a microphone, a blood pressure monitor or a heart rate monitor.

16 . The PD system of claim 13 , wherein the first sensor includes a camera, and wherein the logic analyzes the output from the camera for at least one of facial expression, eye movement, head motion, or mouth movement for at least one of (i) to (iv).

17 . The PD system of claim 16 , wherein the camera is provided by the PD machine.

18 . The PD system of claim 13 , wherein the first sensor includes a microphone, and wherein the logic analyzes the output from the microphone for at least one of patient voice pitch or patient voice loudness for at least one of (i) to (iv).

19 . The PD system of claim 13 , wherein the first sensor includes at least one of a blood pressure monitor or a heart rate monitor, and wherein the logic analyzes the output level from the at least one blood pressure monitor or heart rate monitor for at least one of (i) to (iv).

20 . The PD system of claim 12 , wherein the patient stress level includes a patient stress index relative to the non-stressed patient baseline, the logic forming the patient stress index based on outputs from at least two sensors selected from the group including: a camera, a microphone, a blood pressure monitor and a heart rate monitor.
